Its a shame that in other countries engineers are held in the same esteem and higher as doctors whereas in the UK some bloke who fixes your washing machine can put engineer on the side of their van
Edited to say that if he came in and designed and develped a newer, better one then I'd let him off

The letters aren't just for show, they represent professionalism, knowledge, experience to name a few. If you are working on multi-million pound projects the client/company you work for wants to know your not going to fuck it up.
Here's an example: you go into a meeting with people you've never met before, potential clients say, you usually hand out business cards first. The letters after the name let the people know you aren't a fuckwit.
And if you've spent 20+ years in education you want something to show for it

cheers
as paul says, its not for your own benefit as in look at me - when you work designing literally multi million pound facilities, the company will insist its someone who IS a professional and DOES have the letters, similarley for insurance purposes, the insurance bill for the company will be literally not insure the company if a non certified person had designed the nuclear reactor for example...
think of it as corgi registration like your gas man but on a larger scale

Congratulations. One of my pet hates though but you guys have raised interesting points, had not considered it like that.
I totally agree with the whole entrustment from third parties want to know that you won't 'fuck it up' as it was so elequently put above (lol-i think this should go below the letters for people to understand - 'rest assured, the letters above mean that I will not fuck up')
However, what pisses me off is auto signature on emails to irrelevant parties. Example - I have worked in insurance broking and now work in claims for the NHBC> If you have a claim and you email me to see how it is progressing, why leave the letters on? As far as im concerned you are just someone who owns a house which was built incorrectly. The letters are completely fucking irrelevant (hence pet hate bit)
I think letters after thou name seem essential, if used when relevant.
Well done chaps, I nearly did professional insurance qulification (left job before final test) would have been CERT CII> There was no incentive to do the diploma though, as I saw people with following after their name:
DIP CII
That is not something to be proud of...
