Default escort cos problem. help needed please

hi ,
i was out today driving mouses escort cos,we didnt drive it hard ,we drove for about 8 miles and everything was good, then we stopped at a motorists shop,i parked up,still everything was good, then when i started the engine,it started ok,then the oil pressure reading dropped like a rev counter, and the engine died, then when i tried to start it again,it didnt realy want to start, but when it did,we hed to keep the revs above approx 1500 rpm to stop it cutting out and stalling,we took it the 1/2 mile home slowly, started it as it stalled again trying to park, and there was BLACK smoke from the exhaust,

we let it cool down for 2 hours, and it started first turn of the key, the oil pressure stayed as it should, so i drove it down the road, and as i stopped again to reverse, the oil pressure dropped into the red, (slowly again as if it was a rev counter,)and it died, started a bit rough, and its now sitting outside,

has anyone got any clues to what it might ! be, ie sensors, are there any i can unplug to see if it runs ok,???????????

any help or guidence would be appreciated,

cheers and thanks in advance
dave and mouse

Black smoke - possibly ECT sensor (blue) or MAP sensor (would also indicate why it tried to stall) I had something similar and it was intermittent, and therefore harder to trace, as it all worked perfectly once hooked up to Pectel monitor and @ the tuners

Could also be the main wiring loom plugs giving false readings from the sensors to the ECU if these haven't had any attention.... If when you have the engine running you lift these gently up and down (small movements) and it causes the problem, then check in there for corrosion or broken wires - they really need cutting out and being soldered & heat shruk wrapped.

I would *guess* the oil pressure is falling off as the engine is trying to cut. I assume it has correct oil levels etc?

Does it have a dump valve?

Is it tee'd into the map sensor pipe?

Not too clued up on the small turbo EsCos, but might possibly be worth checking no filter oil has gotten onto the MAF 'wire' in the elbow from the filter......?? It's quite delicate I believe, so be careful when checking it.....

cheers james, apparently it did it once a couple 0f weeks ago. so it could be like bill said, a break in a wire, as it didnt have the k+n on then,so we can rule that out i hope.

This happened to my Large Turbo escos. Id assume that the oil pressure dropped as the revs died really low....like mine....which was MASS overfuelling. Cause was MAP sensor multi plug(the plug that connects wires to sensor)

lee, could it be the fact the k+n was fitted in replacement of the std air box, last week, and its not been adjusted in any way, ie fueling and all that.

i wouldnt have thought the addition of a K+N would cause so many issues to cause mass overfuelling...specially as the filter lets more AIR in not fuel

CONICIDENTLY.....i had not so long before removed my MAP sensor to polish the mounting bracket. This must have damaged the wires(after all cossie looms are poor). A few days later it cut out! Took ages to trace the problem.
