Default Question about being a Goldmember and access... Admin/Mods

Its just occured to me that for the time ive spent on this forum I have contributed in a number of ways some of which include Technical info provided in the 'Technical Discussions' section.

But ive just now realised that no longer being a member I cannot access the section and even read my own post

Seems a bit odd, since I cannot edit it, or worse still add anything to it or create any more technical posts

I am more than happy to do this kind of thing which often includes photos, diagrams etc which I feel could be of use to people. I know for a fact that some of others have been useful to people.

I cannot afford the goldmember subs, but aside from that my question is.........is the Board missing out on useful information???

I do feel like I have contributed to the board for the better by helping people but now feel that I have got little back in return.......

Obviously I cannot get access to any of the Technical ones.....

https://passionford.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=175387

If you think that only takes 10minutes to do then think again........

As it happens yes they did...........about 25 passionford users PM'ing me asking how to do it

I could have said 'sorry i cant help' but thats not me.........I could have PM'd people how to do it, but thought for the good of the board it would be better if I created a Tutorial about how to do it..........

If you think thats wrong thats your opinion of course.

This is by no means a post complaining im not a Goldmember or a post complaining i cant afford the Ł20 or a post saying I should made an honoury member............

Just merely making a point about the way in which it works.

It only came to light when I helped out somebody today on a post with Technical information and found I could get to any of my original information in that section.

I ended up having to create the images again and PM them to him..........

Surely anytime anybody does this others on the board could benefit from it???

That's right. The information that I received this afternoon by pm was fantastic and very useful. Come around and fit my sensor and I'll give you the 20 quid for the membership lol

I do agree though that you are very very helpful and you shouldn't have to pay for the right to help people, maybe this is open to debate?

I can understand not being able to advertise etc because that's for your own gain but you are helping the community and I'm sure you're not the only one out there that feels the same.

The technical essays archive is, as its name suggests, an ARCHIVE. And only available to gold members as it contains the cream of technical essays from yesteryear that were all available in FREE rooms until they died a natural death.

If you want to give, or recieve technical help, use the TECHNICAL HELP room. Which, incidentally, is free to all members...

Unsure what the problem is here to be honest...

Correct me if im wrong though Stu, but weren't posts created in the Technical Discussion moved to the archives at a later date???

If you want to give, or recieve technical help, use the TECHNICAL HELP room. Which, incidentally, is free to all members...
Surely though it is easier to point somebody to the archives to view the answer already???
Only if they are not a GoldMember they dont get access, and instead you could find the same questions clogging up the server thats already been asked and answered in the archives???

Unsure what the problem is here to be honest...
Put simply I cannot get access to my own post in the Technical Archives as I am no longer a Goldmember

I think everybody should have access to their own Posts......

I dont mean replies, I mean ones that they have created, even if they were created in a now restricted area or moved to one...........

Is that so wrong?

Ah, got you mate, and your absolutely right. In my defense, when we started the archive everyone was happy to have their stuff archived in their own username so that it would live on to help other users in years to come rater than just be deleted when the database is cleaned yearly, but if your unhappy with that decision i am more than happy to remove them from the archive at once. Please give me the topic links and i will do it this morning for you. Sorry to have caused any inconvenience.

Stu,

Thanks for the reply.

But....surely a Topic created which is in the interests of benefiting users of the forum is a good thing for everyone?

I do not wish to have the posts deleted as they will be of use to others im sure im still not sure you understand my point though.

Example:

If somebody posts asking about cam timing and pulleys realtionships they could get the information from my Cam pulley/crank Timing post (as long as they are a Goldmember).
As have many in the past already done so.

But.........if I felt that this post could be updated with more informtion or indeed better pictures/diagrams I am now unable to do so...........

It is this I question about the Goldmember membership?

I am more than happy to create similar posts that are requested as ive done in the past. If anybody takes some photographs of a significant task i.e. Turbo overhaul, fitting an X etc etc I would create them.

But as it stands, any of a technical nature could end up in the Archives and any access from me would then be lost.........

Can an individual in the same circumstances as myself be allowed to have access to all their topics??? even those moved to a now resticted area???

I dont see how this would affect the Goldmembership process unless you feel differently...........

IMO if you can afford to run a cosworth powered vehicle (or other car for that matter) then Ł20 towards the upkeep of this board is a no brainer.

but what if hes a member of 5 or 6 boards?all with admin fees?it then becomes a lot more than simply a 20 pound fee!and seeing as hes not charging to give any advice how can he be charged to read it back to himself or amend it to help others?

It everyone who is telling him to pay is missing the point entirely, he wants to edit/delete or amend things he has written out for the good of the masses. Why should have have to pay to give other people free help!?!

Im sure there some data protection act being breached there.

Stu, if you had written a technical essay about something, how would you feel about not being able to go back and amend/review it?

Surely they can give you access just to the technical section then? As you help out so much in there... if they dont, then dont help anyone anymore

You're obviously entitled to your own opinion, but I still think you misunderstand this post. I do not wish to be a Goldmember so how can you say it is about being one

I am saying it is about NOT being a goldmember since the issues I have raised have only come to light since I did not sign upto being a Goldmember after my last expiration.

I cant see everybody suddenly stop paying, since those who can afford may well pay it like yourself.
I could argue that my Goldmember subs already paid in the past have helped to me the BB what it is today so people like you can enjoy it.......

Why do people keep saying Ł20 isnt a lot? To some people it is. Who is anyone on here to say what is expensive or what isnt

If matey cant afford it, he cant afford it. Simple as that.

I also understand what he is saying. He has put a lot of time and effort into technical posts, that he now cant even read.

The Technical essay archive is just that, an archive of information that was once free. Had it NOT been archived, it would ultimately have been pruned and lost forever, benfitting nobody.

The archive is a benefit and incentive for gold members and always has been. If we have no incentive we have no gold members, no gold members = no site and, interestingly, no more problems.

I fail to see what your problem is, i can understand your point about wanting to access your own posts and i have offered to move your own posts back into technical help where they belong, and i am happy to do that for any member unhappy with his/her topic being in the archive.

Please read my words before replying.
People agree to have it put into there in the first place, in fcat, 95% of what is in there is there becuase the topic starter ASKED for it to be put there and it has ALWAYS been gold membership only.

Topics should not be just STARTED in there, and even if they were, you would know its gold membership access only so your fault if you put it in there surely?

Finally, and for the last time, if you dont want your topic in there, i will remove it, IT IS NOT A PROBLEM.

If you can please Move any of them in resticted areas i'd appreciate that very much

However, I will say that some of the responses to this post have altered my thoughts of the Forum

There were 2 in there pal:

&

Both these great topics now reside in the technical help forum.

No afraid not...........

Just to clarify though, If I were to create any future Topics in a 'How to' illustrated type way they would go into the Archives? Im guessing not....
Would that not defeat the purpose of the archives themselves?
And i'd find myself in trouble for trying to help?

And that being the case they would not be held like in the archives (as normal posts move down and new ones are entered) thus requiring anybody who might want that information to have to search for it?

I think you missunderstand the word Archive.
The Archive is simply a selection of old posts. They never start life in that room, they should be started elsewhere as normal and if deemed worthy of saving, be moved over there for prosperity at the starters or other members request. If you wish your topics to stay in the normal tech room then thats where they shall stay.
