Default 1700 Crossflow

How much should i expect to pay for one? Thinking of fitting one to the kitcar im building because of its simplicity compared to a zetec eg hardly any wiring ect as i want to keep the car as simply as possible.

also what kin of power will i get from one with twin carbs and head work just a basic figure please. been told you can get 150+ bhp with a bit of work.

Any advice would be great links ect.

you would pay more for a crossflow than you would a nice zetec

I know the zetecs are really cheap but its a lot more work to convert for RWD use not to mention all the wiring,ecu ect that also has to be fitted. Im trying to build a car that can be worked on really easy needs to be simple.

i thought all you do is move the thermostat

you will have a better engine, and the car would be alot easyer to sell when/if it comes to it!

the wiring is piss mate

130-140bhp if you had something like twin 40's, mild cam, mildly ported head with slightly bigger inlet valves. They aren't easy to get over 150bhp and you'd be building something thats pretty much race spec for that type of power.

Why not go for something like a Zetec or a XE Redtop and just run it on carbs?

I dont really want a zetec or redtop too common plus like i said i want it to be as simple as it can be.

1660 xflow, 40's on matched and pinned ported manifold to ported big valve head, alloy rocker cover with breather, ARP rod bolts, 1300 AF pistons, Kent BCFA3 cam, lightened flywheel with twin cam 7.5" clutch, Luminition and micro dynamics rev limiter. 4-2-1 high flow manifold with new heat wrap, Uprated alternator, genuine Ford Fan, baffled sump, pipercross filter. Recently top and tailed and geniune reason for reluctant sale. moving up to 16v XE. £700

Gives you an idea of what you get for your money. Thats a nice spec, wouldn't have thought you'd get much over 150bhp from it though.

I bought a 1660cc xflow that was supposed to be 135bhp, cost me £350 and turned out to be shafted.

you get over 150bhp just from a Pre-Crossflow!!!

About 180bhp is about the limit afaik, but we're talking alot of money to get it to that kinda power.

I paid £250 iirc for a 1660 with high-lift cam. I've spent a few quid on it since and it's amost 100% reliable and does make a nice sound and goes quite well. Obviously if i fitted twin carbs i should be seeing about the 130 region which would be ideal. Except it already does 15mpg so i just couldn't afford to run twin carbs

Unless you really want to i would go zetec, run it on carbs with edis ford ignition or megaspark and with a few choice mods should see 140-150 with ease.

I know you can. I've seen a 1300cc Crossflow make over 150bhp in Classic Ford. I don't think thats quite what Topbombingkid is looking for though.

No , not easily , you have to go all steel and make them rev for that , thats why BDH engines and the Lotus twincams were developed , the x-flow is a happy little motor at 130 bhp but as already mentioned , because its only an 8 valver they become race engines and hard to live with !

I've never read so much tosh in all my days....

A customer of mine has an Anglia with a proper pre-crossflow engine in it, built by a very reputable tuner and its 150bhp and you could almost buy a concours 3 door for what he paid for his engine.

I had a good spec pre-crossflow in my Anglia saloon before I put the Zetec in it and that only made 100bhp, that was with the big valve ported head etc

The average Crossflow with Mild Cam and Mild head porting will make about 100bhp and very little more.

To get up around 140 at the fly you are talking lary cam, big valve head with loads of work, hi compression, pair of 40's or 45's, a decent exhaust manifold, not some shonky old 4 into 2 into 1 from a MkI Mexico. A proper worked dizzy.

Vulcan do a motor which they class as there 145bhp spec and by the time you've added all the bits you need it will easily be £3000+


You are being very blinkered thinking a crossflow is cheap power and simple.

A zetec on carbs with something like Weber Alpha you literally plug in the crank sensor, plug in the coil pack, plug in the throttle position sensor and it will run and give you around 165bhp on a 2.0 and 155 on a 1.8

Everything is readily available off the shelf, its just bolt on and bolt in, loads of Westfields and Locosts run Zetecs so there is loads of expertise about and companies like Northampton Motorsport (www.northamptonmotorsport.com) who run their own Westfield in one of the race series can advise on exactly what you do and dont need.


Just to help you a little more, you could by a 2.0 Zetec from a breakers for around £100

You will be very lucky if you can get a 711m based Crossflow for that money these days and if you can it will most likely need a re-build before you start tuning it.

Find a mondeo or a Focus with 60,000 on the clock and it will still go on for another 100,000 and be mega reliable.
