Default What causes cossie exhaust flames

(apart from a flamer kit!)

I love seeing cars spit out the odd flame or two (my dad's Westfield for example ) but don't want a chavy flamer kit.

Obviously its when they overfuel but it is only a certain spec / set-up that causes this?

Oi there's nothing chavy about flamer kits, they produce the desired effect

It's the fact that input values to the ECU are time-averaged, so that it takes a certain amount of time for the high boost and open throttle readings to settle out, hence it takes a small time for the ECU to cut back the fuel on overrun IMO.

Either that or the map is just not very good?

Neil.

i 'think' the main cause is the over run fuel being lit by the very hot exhaust...some mappers use more fuel than others on the over run mind

Take it a 150mph blast down the motorway for a min or 2, get the exhaust hot....then let it roll down the gears on overunn (at night) an u'll see

This is what happened to mine (not up to 150mph mind you). My mate was driving my cos and I was in his 200sx. As he was cogging it down to stop at the lights a MASSIVE flame shot out. it was there for what seemed like ages too, I thought it was never gonna go out.

mine used to spit massive flames all the time after Mark had mapped it.

Doesnt spit any flames at all since it was mapped by Alan @AVA.

must be someting in the map

A leaking exhaust manifold also used to cos big flames.

My car used to do it on b roads without a flamer when it was stage 1, but only occasionally when giving it real horse and lifting from full throttle then reopening the throttle.

Really fast and bright flashes, not the drawn out flames you get from a flamer kit.

It's now on a MSD 803 0.63A/R T34 chip with Closed Loop fuelling and it does it like mad on gearchanges (with a flamer )

My stage 3 setup done it using an ahmed chip and my greys setup using a Stu chip also does. Big lingering flames that stay hanging out the back of the tailpipe for 20 secs some times. When the exhaust is proper hot and big boost gear changes and over run in 5th a lot

i was always under the impression that performance turbo'd engines also pop and bang when you hit the limiter and iirc some limiters cut the spark rather than fuel so unburnt fuel ends up going through the exhaust and igniting on the hot pipe anyone??

am i talking dog mess???

thats like driving a ferrari F40 and saying i dont want it to throw flames out on the over run cause im 67 or how ever old you said.

if that was me in the F40 i know it would probably be enough for me to floor it again straight after hearing the bangs, just imagine the feeling
