Make sure you go on the least powerfull unit for no more than 6 minutes and make sure you moisturise your skin afterwards.
Once you have been a few sessions, you will start to get used to it and can go on higher watt machines and for longer time.
Always moisturise afterwards or your skin will dry out.

All depends on your skin tone etc, and you NEVER do one 6min session followed up by a 12 min. You're supposed to build up gradually, and never more than once in 24 hours, although 48 is a much better recommendation.
Also, never do more than 20 in a year, and if you are very fair skinned, stay away from them.
That's info from the Health and Safety Executive, so pay attention to it.
20 a year,,,,, fucking hell,,,, my missus uses our sunbed soo much that EDF deliver there electric bills to us by hand
but then she does tan real well and dont suffer from orangitus like popeye does

rich has given some very good advise paul, i would take note of it
then you get the silly fucker like me who go a over board on them
i usually do 3 months of tanning and then take 3 off and so on ( this is way way to much, even do that here in australia, lol )
when i start back on them i never go longer than 10mins a session for the first week, 12mins the second week and then on to my usual 16mins ( do 3 times a week )
you dont have to use tanning lotions but its a good idea if you want a deeper tan, as 70% of the uv's are reflected away from you if you dont.
i person like to use swedish beauty chocolate silk which is the strongest non bronzing non tingle cream
bronzing creams do as they say ( bit like fake tanning lotions )
tingle creams bring the blood vessels to the top of the skin, you can go red with the strongest of these without going on the bed at all ( it dont tan you though, just makes you red for an hour or so, lol ) i dont like the feeling of these creams at all.
and remember never use a tanning lotion as a sun block, there not, they enchance the uv's to you, well unless you want to look like aj

You can't be specific about tanning times, it depends TOTALLY on 2 factors....
1. Your Skin-tone
2. The type of tanning unit and it's power output.
You need to go to a Tanning Centre who knows what they are talking about and follow THEIR advice, not some people on a car forum who have probably never clapped eyes on you!
