Default Quite strange Saff problem

its hard to explain so bear with me......

when starting the car from cold and driving it, after about 5 miles the temp gauge shoots up to about the N, and then goes straight back down again

The heaters also do the same thing though, when the temp gauge goes right up the heaters are nice and hot, but once the temp goes back down the heaters are lukewarm

only seems to do it on say a 10mile journey, doesnt tend to do it on short runs

any ideas?

Yeah, sounds like thermostat. It goes up high until the thermostat eventually opens then it plumets back down again.
