We had a 2004 L200 animal was a great truck, apparently the L200 and Nissan Nivara are the top too - I imagine the hilux are cheaper? Although L200 4lifes are cheaper (obviously just trim options) we test drove the animal and the 4life and the 4life was awful, but each truck has individual feel, the 4life was a bit older and had more miles so bound to feel different.
The Animal only did about 25mpg urban, limited turning circle and a pain to park in tesco
I loved it though!
Beware the L200 can only be switched to 4x4 if off road or there is snow on the ground the older ones only have two options RWD and locked diff 4x4 so you shouldn't use the 4x4 on hard ground (see sticker on the inner doors) I believe the same is to be said for all older trucks
I'd probably go for L200 but I've always liked the look of the older hilux's

I'm saving up for an L200.
Seems to be quite a bit of confusion over specs and stuff even in the owners club.
Apparently all L200's arrive in the UK at normal L200 4Work models and all the trim is added to make up the 4Life, Trojan, Warrior and Animal. So effectively if you got hold of the bits you could make a single cab Warrior and such.
It's also a bit confusing at the moment as Mitsubishi currently sell both the L200 and 'The New L200'
Supposed to very capable off road due to the lockable rear diff and one of the better car alternatives. Of course like anything there are some horror stories out there.

While awaiting our Animal to be prepped we had use of a 'new' 2006 L200 warrior, IMO was a much better truck than the older ones, better turning circle, fancy diff so you had 3 choices, rwd, 4x4 or 4x4 locked diff, so the 4x4 option could be used on hard ground/road, much better turning circle, felt bigger but actually easier to park, dash so much more up-to-date (our 2004 felt old inside) definitely had more of a 'car' feel to it but unfortunately a hell of a lot more money

Pass, pretty sure our 2004 had a been chipped though defo had more grunt than the 4life, though that could've simply been that it was a year or so newer with lower mileage, but I'm 99.9% sure your right and there is an upgrade chip available (even though there was no paperwork with ours to suggest it had had it)

I had a warrior for 2 years and to behonest i thought it was shit. Shit on fuel, shit on tyres, and generally not nice to drive for a long time. My sister has it and i had to use it the other day and i couldnt wait to get out of it.
Ive now got a new nissan navara adventura and its the best out there at the moment.I drove everything else when i was looking and nothing can touch it. I drive it everyday and covered 20k miles in 10months. Nothing has gone wrong and i do tend to drive it a little hard sometimes. Only thing that lets it down a bit is the sat nav can be a pain sometimes.

IMO it really depends on the age of the truck.
A friend of mine has a plot of woodland which he maintains and he has an M plate Hilux and a P plate L200 and the Hilux is by far a better truck. In fact I have been there on a number of occasions when he has had to use the Hilux to pull out the L200 plus the hilux is more reliable.
Again these two motors are a few years old now and things have probably changed on the newer models.
