whats the best make to go for?
at the moment i'm looking at either Hitachi or seagate but finding it hard to decide as i've herd both good and bad about both
western digital is an option but their drives always seem more expensive and i'm not sure their rated that well?
anyone got any good recomendations as i want something that trust wont die after 5 mins

IBM drives have always been sh*t hot, but can die unexpectedly

Seagate have never let me down, and I had a really bad experience with Western Digital.
Barracuda if you're using IDE or SATA, or if you use SCSI like me, Cheetahs every time

Ive Run Western Digital since day one, also used Seagate, with the seagate's i found the access speeds are really quick. Haven't run Seagate for a few years though.
Cozmeister, what happened to your Western Digi?

Seagate all the way, I got a 200gb seagate couple of years ago as a storage drive for music and movies. I take it to all my mates houses all the time and its not external so I disconnect it, chuck it in a bag, leave it in the car in the cold, basically abuse it, and it has never let me down. Had Maxtor drive before and it was sh*t.
N.B. - Also, if your hardrive does happen to die on you, before chucking it away, get 'low format' from the internet. You have to get the right one for your hard drive (seagate, maxtor, western digital etc) but it resets it to factory settings, more thorough than standard format. This has saved me money in the past and disc works brand new. And if it doesn't, you can be sure that it is dead!

Maxtor's are hit and miss, sometimes you can get one that lasts years, and sometimes you'll get one that lasts a couple of months maybe. I find they get too hot for their own good.
As i said before, Seagate

the drive i'm looking to replace is a maxtor, had it about 2 years now and its been fine till the other week it started playing up (sounded like it was switching itself on and off)
its not done it since but it does seem quite sluggesh now so i'm going to replace it before it finially gives up, with maxtor just being taken over by seagate i don't really want to get another one as theres been so many reports of fualty drives from them recently.
seagate seem like the winning option so far to me.
