They're not banned in this country. There are two types. The japanese Akita and American Akita. American one is slightly smaller. There may be other types but none that I know of.

A lot of people will tell you they were originally bred as fighting dogs, but they weren't. As above, can be very prone to temper changes, and really need a decent owner to look after them as they need loads of exercise and its not the kind of thing your average person can walk. Ours was around the 12stone mark, and if it decided it was going without you, then there wasn't much you could do about it.

Had it at the same time as a Bull Mastiff and a rottweiler. The Akita used to put the Rottweilers head in its mouth and carry it about. Just to give you an idea of the phenomenal amount of power they have

no,not yet.they are a bit like a rotty.can be very aggressive and turn but then thats all down to the way its trained and treated.a bloke near me has two and a friend has two but my mates never had more than a warning growl.

they are like the sled dogs and do require alot of work to keep.we keep huskies and i have mates with malamutes, both are hard work but these breeds are very freiendly due to being bred to be with the mum and kids while the men were out hunting

those books are very informative though but really its best to speak to owners and see their houses.all these breeds can be destructive.

it comes from using their mouths for the work they were bred for.like retreiver dogs, alsatians etc.

my m8s cousin has one of these and they are beautiful dogs, as said they can throw a temper now and again as i learned when working on my car in his garage (quick trip to A&E and 14 stiches in my arm!) but the dog thought i was an intruder in the workplace cos i dont work there n hadnt seen me before.

Wouldnt recommend them to 1st time dog owners but if the person is an experianced dog handler then yes these can be wonderful dogs to have!

The Akita used to put the Rottweilers head in its mouth and carry it about. Just to give you an idea of the phenomenal amount of power they have [/quote] you sure dont think akitas are in the same leage as rottweilers these were working dogs so for sheer power think the rotti would win hands down. akitas were only used to hunt bears for their owners.

Yes I'm sure. The Akita and the mastiff used to play tug of war with the rottweiler. I'm not saying if the two dogs were fighting to the death it would be the same. They were dogs that were brought up together and as far as I could see it was playfulness. The rottweiler wasnt struggling. It obviously liked being carried about like that. And for sheer power then the Akita has it in bucketloads over a rottweiler. A 12stone Akita compared to an 8 stone Rottweiler.

I take it you missed his "but" as take that out of his quote and it looks like he's one of those muppets that want a dog for the image and fighting

beautiful dog and if in the right hands well behaved as all dogs are, my dads family in scotland breed them and last time i heard had about 25, including some monsters!

i love them and would have one tommorow if we had the facilities to keep a dog of that size! make sure your friends kno that they need plenty of long walks, a dog like that cant be kept indoors all day, too cruel!

I dont know much about the Akita but another type of big dog id recommend is the bouvier des flandres. We had one when i was a kid and it was a really nice dog proper chilled out, i used to hang off it and cuddle up with it no bother. It loved to play especailly when it was a pup, used to stalk me then pounce on me and lick me to death. They are proper protective of their owners aswell.

It would never go for anyone normally , but when i was little my older next door neighbour was hanging me upside down by my legs the dog heard me shouting and went for him big time , got hold of his arm and mum had to hit with a frying pan to get it off. That was the only time it ever attacked someone though.

Ours got quite fat cause it didnt like going for walks . It loved going for car rides but didnt wanna go for a walk. I used to try and take to the field across my road it would come with me out the door thinking its going in the car and as soon as you walked past the car it would just sit down and you had no chance of dragging it along due to its size Loverly dogs and have a proper charcter to them . Ours was called Laika after the first dog in space
