Default Cosworth engine , would you change....

Basically need some views on this one people as im at a bit off a crossroads to say the least

Now ive bent a valve or two as some of yo may no already , and obviously heads coming off to sort that out , so going to get the head sorted out to a decent spec , again not sure what as yet

Now the questin is would you do the bottom end ? Now didnt have any problems that i know of with it ,accept some piston slap from cold

Now engines a bit of a unknown to me as have not had car that long really and bottom end will be standard i can bet on that for sure , now got a stage 2 t35 turbo , 500 cooler and all the stage 3 stuff and going to be upgrading to light blues and a 044 pump as i have them here to fit once engines sorted ,and also chip to suit my spec

Now could leave bottom end as it is and just get it back together and go from here but was thinking of the long run when i up the power slightly ?
If anyone has any views let me know as it would help me decide on what is best to do or any simalr scenarios that people may of had

how many miles has the bottom end done?

as any prob with wear will most prob raise thier head when you raise the boost...

if it has done over 50 k miles i would re built for peace of mind....

As above seeing as you have the head off anyway you are half way there.
What ever you deside hope all turns out well.

Good advice from Euan above......just look for wear on the bores,if there's a good amount then you can bet your life the rings are letting oil past and raising power will only exaggerate it, on the other hand tired engines can still run for ages and make good power, just tend to smoke and slap a bit

Dunno Rab, maybe a light freshen up but don't go daft. There's no need. I'd suggest just doing the bare essentials depending on how much power you're chasing..

Obviously a full rebuild would be best but if it aint broke...

You never know mate, it might, it might not. Have a look when the heads off and take it from there. Price the parts you need ect and make your decision from that.

If you're intending on keeping it for a long time then what's another 4-6 weeks off the road so you end up with a right good build. Whats Johnny saying about it? Look at his engine, that's made really good results.

if it was me a would measure the bores for wear, and then if all was ok a would put new piston rings and shells in it only takes a couple of hours if all goes well would even upgrade to arp bolts if not already done

Deffo take a look at it, I took mine apart as the piston rings were shot to find the big end bearings were on the verge of failing, car did have 100K on it though.

At least if you do it you know its been done and don't have too much of a worry if its causing a problem unless you fit it back together incorrectly.

I Think a light rebuild would cost around £1600, That should be drive in out. + how ever much you are going to spend on the head say £500.
This should give you a rough idea
