Default Buying a Golf VR6!!!

Hey peeps, HAPPY NEW YEAR AND ALL THAT!!!

Just lost a good deal on Auto trader as i was too slow!! (Golf VR6, tax, mot, full VW service history, 70k on clock, 1 owner from new....£1450!!! )

anyhow....there is another one on there...similar spec, etc BUT it has 180,000 on the clock!!! this seems alot and i'm not keen on traveeling to Leeds to look at it with this amount of miles, regardless of FVWSH.

Does anyone else think this is alot of miles??? or is this normal on a VR6???

any advice on what to look for on these???

and before anyone says.....I KNOW THIS IS A FORD SITE!!!

cheers!!!

Keith

Seems like too many miles to me. The first one sounded like a bargain though.

the mileage wont be a problem if its been serviced regularly, and if the timing chains were done around the 85k mark and/or were done recently.

Cheers,
Matt.

I paid £1800 with 126k with full main dealer history and totally standard..
Check when you turn the ignition on the ABS light comes on then goes off as they are a common problem with ABS probs. Most people take the bulbs out

I got mine from Leeds, but thats where i live lol, if you want me to have a look at it i can do for ya.

also if its a mk3 golf make sure its one that came with a galvonised chassis (i think thats any on or after an 'M' plate) as the ones before were prone to rott.

That is far too expensive for a K plate with that mileage The K plate ones were the ones that had problems with the heads or something like that and they aren't on coilpacks either.

On a K reg you'd only expect to pay that for one with 100k on the clock. I sold my wifes L reg VR6 with leather and 106k on it for £1450 back in the summer.

They are nice to drive but as standard they don't handle. Get the latest one you can and make sure that if it's close to 100k that it's had the cam chain done because they are very expensive to replace because the gearbox has to come off

I found the brakes to be very poor on my wifes one so I upgraded them from the standard 280mm ones to the later 288mm ones and although there's no real difference in size they work much much better. My wifes one had konis all round on it though.

My wife replaced the VR6 with a mark 3 gti 16 valve due to fuel and insurance costs (and a 2.8 + a woman is a waste ) so I swapped the suspension & brakes onto the gti and that's much better Driving the standard gti back from where we bought it from was awful because it was so high and there was so much body roll

Go and test drive one and if you can try a gti 16 valve.

The superchargers on the G60 engine can be very expensive to replace or repair when they go wrong and the G60 engine isn't that powerful as standard.

Standard golf headlights are also pretty poor but these are a nice upgrade and I only paid £130 for them brand new 3 years ago I swapped them onto the gti too as seen below.

Get a tidy mk2 Golf ( cheap as chips ) and a Passat VR6 estate for about £500 and put the engine in the mk2

Thats what we did..

mk3 VRs are soggier than a blancmange thats been soaked in soggy fluid.

Try an get a 95model or later they come with the obd2 management and are slightly quicker, its easy to tell the models apart as the later ones dont have the plastic arch kits, etc etc and are all colour coded!

drive one before you buy one.

if you are a press on driver you will not be impressed, its a bit like driving a powerfull sponge pudding. Nice engine, quite quickand silcky smooth but as soon as you want to drive it hard on the corners the suspension lets you down, soft, bouncy, arm fulls of understeer and smoking brakes if you take it on a track.

they all tend to have high mileage, even 5 years ago it was hard to find one < 100k miles. Last one I sold was a 98-R Hi line 1 owner fsh 90k miles lovely old thing sold it for £2.5k had loads of life left in it, 180k no problem if fsh and looked after.

If you find any that have sub 100k miles and does not have fully documented history (old mots bills etc) it will almost certainly have been clocked, so lookout for shiney steering wheels, worn smooth gearnob, worn pedal rubbers and freyed seat belts. Mk3 Golfs are more than capable of 200k+ miles with no problem hence lots of clocked ones....
