The S40 T4's are actually 1.9 [1885 cc] and 200bhp, great cars for the money in my opinion

The T5's are all 2.3's [225bhp] although they also did 2.5 T's [ 193 bhp] as well

The best of the older ones are the 850 R's as they were 250 bhp

And they also did a T-5R which was a limited edition and I think they only did them in yellow or black

The S40 is a 4 pot and the rest are all 5 if it makes any difference to you.

I'm not a volvo geek honest

Good cars the 850 T5, would have another if i was looking for a cheap car.

Here's my old one, sold it last summer. Its an 850R but still has the T5 2.3 turbo lump.

I personally prefer the 900's to the 9000's

They're all FWD as well.

The 900's get confusing as the best one [imo] is the Talladega 2.0 SE, the E is important as these were the ones with the turbo engines, the S's were N/A.

All the 900 turbos [non talladegas as well] are 4 pots and 185 ish bhp but the Talladega's have a nicer kit and spec

The 9000's are barges imo.

If you can stretch the 9-3 Viggens are the nuts 2.3 turbos but only made them for a year though in 99-2000

Saabs like to knock out brakes for some reason and the little SiD [Saab Information Display] likes to break although it's not an important part of the car

I like the Saabs because they're awesome value for money and with German Swedish and French available with parts, they're not that expensive to run.

We just sold a 9-5 2.0 T Estate on a T plate with an engine upgrade kit [allegedly from 150 - 200bhp] and that was Ł3995

I drove Nutters T5 round the ring last year.

For what it was it did the job- brakes gave up early on.

I certainly wouldn't entertain owning one.. for the money they command I personally think they're wank.

Comfy tho

I've got a V70 T5 at the moment with 141 K on the clock and its still as quiet as anything. I bought one after doing my Police advanced in one, so I know they can shift.

To be honest although they are reliable, they are very expensive when they go wrong, even compared to the Cosworth.

You can pick up an early V70 T5 reasonably cheap and they come fully loaded. They eat front tyres, the brakes on the early cars are crap unless you go for the Police spec upgrade, traction isn't the best when moving off quickly and they handle ok. More of a motorway cruiser than for chucking around the streets. You can get the ecu remapped to 280 bhp for around Ł500, and other performance upgrades are available.

Stay away from cars from 99 - 2001 as they have electronic throttle body problems, and I'd personally plump for a manual.

They still make the T5 R and this is very quick, but they are a lot more expensive.

My 850R above was an auto, most are auto's but you can get manuals to, auto is slightly slower. The main differences between the 850 T5 & the 850R are: The R has a deeper front bumper, 17 inch wheels in anthracite (T5 has 16 inch) T5 225 bhp, 850 R 250bhp, 850R has lower & stiffer suspension than T5, the 850R & T5R always comand a heavy premium over the 850 T5, the 850 T5 is better value for money as these can be bought cheaply.

Volvos have better build quality than saab, i compared it to Rattys 850, the saab is not a patch in build quality, but saabs look a little more stylish.

Volvo renowned for doing mega miles, 400,000 is not uncomman apparently.
Most saabs will do 200,000 dependent how you drive.

Saab the clutch is expensive if it goes looking around Ł500 quid with a slave cylinder, good brakes but as said i get through lots of disks, (like a ford).

SID (info dsplay lose pixels but plenty of cheap fixes, cost around 50 to get recon'd

Only major 850 problems are door straps and stupid bits.

Apparently go for 850s, avoid early petrol v70s unless late 2000

He couldnt be fooked bought brand new car

Paid Ł1200 for it off him, with 11 months MOT and 12 months Tax Ł300 for rebuild turbo and Ł200 for Cat, Ł30 in oil and new set of plugs Ł1730 Later nice saab, had it 12 months done 26k in it myself

I almost bought a Saab 9000 Carlsson turbo years ago but my wife stopped me as she hated it i do like Saabs though.

Funny you saying about the difference in quality because a friend of mine had a 05 plate Volvo V70 D5 company car & it went back after a year & he's now got a Saab estate the one with the clear/white rear lights and silver bits round the headlights a 56 plate new one,i'm not up on the new Saab models. He also said the Volvo was a lot better built & felt more solid than the Saab, he prefered the V70 but the Saab is cheaper to lease.

Theres nothing wrong with the early petrol V70's compared to the 850

the common early v70 faults are
door straps
reverse light switch
elec window switch
air con faults

Older volvo's do suffer with air con probs & cost a packet to fix, very common for air con not to work on 850's.

i'm another one who wants a t5, aside from the obvious traction problems and the fact it's a comfortabe crusier than a roadster. But once you have traction [3rd gear ] your away and very quick they are too. I've not been in a standard once but the 300bhp conversions seriously shift big time.

If they done a 850r with awd i dare say there'd be alot of escos owners buying one of them instead.

I love saabs aswell, the first turbo car i went in was a 9-5 and i was very impressed!!
