Default Weight Saving

Was thinking that instead of continually increasing the power on my cossie, why not make the best of the power I have at the moment. Easiest way to do that as far as i can make out is to make the cossie as light as possible.

What can be done that doesnt cost the earth to make a saff as light as possible? I never have anyone in the back so back seats can go and im not worried about extra noise or rattles and bangs due to having less weight.

So any ideas would be helpful

Proper grip and handling via good suspension geometry, proper diff, and proper tyres, will all make a bigger difference overall than less weight, IMO.

Sierras understeer too much and dont have enough steering self correction (lack of front camber and castor), have a diff so crap it may as well be an open one, and terrible rear suspension geometry (too much toe out and neg camber).

Sort that lot and the motor will be transformed IMO.

Aside from stavros' comment weight saving wise remove everything you can unbolt i.e; rear seats, (seatbelts in the back are quite heavy items too), door trims, boot trims, lob the spare etc and then if you've no intention of putting the car back to original get the grinder and the hole saw out and chop stuff off - brackets etc. Also, all the soundeadening off the floor etc. Oh, get the headlining gone too.

rich,

Thats what i done !

If your at the surrey meet tonight, i'll go through it & show ya

I got a box in the garage of all the "little" bits i ripped outta her & you can bearly lift the box ! Thats not including the sound deadening, carpets, rear seats, bench, carbon bonnet, carbon door card, spare wheel well, boot hinges, bonnet catch etc ! Plus i started cuttin holes in verious places !

Still got more to go tho, also got no PAS as there's an oil pump sitting there & got braided lines throughout the car for oil, fuel & brakes

Cheers,

Jb

P.s. i would say it made a huge difference but i built it with all this in mind so wouldn't of know how she went with all the standard stuff on in the first place ! LOL

P.p.s. edited cos i forgot somethings & i know there's more !

Agree with Steve.

Far more satisfaction to be had from sorting the handling than saving a few kilos..... especially if you want to do a few trackdays mate.

Also forgot to say.....

She got rose jointed TCA's, quaife diff , Eccentric top mounts, Leda coil overs (Springs way to stiff for road) all round, Ap 335's etc.

Only thing left to sort is the Mikey R's rear shims

Thanks for the replys. Some mixed opinions.

Steve: you obviosuly missed the bit that said "dont cost the earth" proper diff is £1K + and suspension geometry requires a rear beam but you are correct. If only i had the money.

Black RS: That was the sort of info i was after, but taking a grinder to it

Rich: Yes track days are in mind. You just cant drive real fast these days on the roads unless its like 3am and the roads are deserted.

JB: I have fitted Gaybird shims on mine. Easy to do and im sure they make a difference

In my opinion, you will turn your car into a rattly noisy nasty smelly place mate...

I bet your car goes like stink!!! do you REALLY need to go faster considering you use it everyday and do only a few trackdays??

What WILL make you alot quicker and safer on track and road is driver training and thats one of the only mods that last for ever and you can take from car to car with you

Lee,

Cheers for posting bud. I hardly ever drive the cossie now as i have a 2nd car for work. I am loosing my track virginity this year . I was think about handling as well, and thought less weight would be an advantage, but seeing as you have a fully stripped car, I will take your advice
