I do agree that it's about playing the right tracks, but also about the technical side. That's why I love trying to do long mixes but only play cracking tunes

bit of a cunts attitude really isnt it
Every DJ started off either in his bedroom, or mates bedroom/studio
Out of interest, what did you actually 'do' for turbo promotions!?
The difference with bedroom dj's are some think they can mix and some actually can mix, we booked guys for the main arena that could
That's why Garage/One Nation was at the top of it's game
Does it really matter what Terry or Jason employed me to do!
Cold, handing out flyers at the end of raves was it!??
Wouldn't know mate, flyers weren't my department, that was down to Paul and his minions and bedroom dj's

Mate I am a vinyl purist through and through. Nothing in the world compares to the buzz of mixing with vinyl.
But you have to move with the times as the old saying goes...

I see what you're saying: in the fact you can get thousands of tracks onto cd's or usb sticks..but I don't go anywhere that neccesitates that many tracks and I only do either smaller sets or with a few mates local or at a house so no need for me to have that many tracks.
To be honest, I've never tried cd mixing as I love the more physical side of vinyl mixing: looking through the records, sticking the vinyl on the platter, cue-ing it up, using your fingers to beat match the start of the mix, spin backs now and again..that side of it.
None of this pressing buttons malarky. You can get players now that will even do the mixing for you..takes the fun out of it for me.

he lines up records in the blinks of an eye
Its practice, and nothing more!
The skill is bringing it into the mix and fine tuning it without it being heard/obvious

What a good thread
Si, doesnt using USB sticks throw the most important part of DJ'ing out the window? FUN
I remember cramming my Sound Labs DLP1's (belt driven ) decks, a mixer, an amp and 2 massive Jamo speakers in my bedroom. Just about had room to open the record bag lol, but to me it was fun and then i played at a few 6th form parties etc etc. Never went anywhere and grew bored of it when tinkering with cars became part of my life, but i couldnt imgaine anything fun about USB sticks Maybe its just me

usb sticks all sounds a bit .. super trance DJ to me
I must admit I use MP3's now a lot more just because it saves me spending Ł55 on a dub!
but 90% of my sets are vinyl

ive tried cd mixin... it works dont get me wrong but nothin compared to the real deal on vinyl...
the most important factr here i think is different genres are mixed different...
and with garage it can b mixed like house... smooth and slow... or cchopped and quick...
and in a club u cannot beat chopped and quick... it keeps ya hyped...
where as smooth and long is relaxin and easy listenin...
DJ is the master at chopped and quick and he has a style like no one b4 him...
i think in a club he is untouchable for house n garage

So many of you are so wrong......
The skill is not the mixing......!!!!!!!!!
Mixing is a sport that can be learnt with a good teacher in around 3 hours...........
The skill is entertaining a crowd of 5000 people for 6 hours...
Thats the hard bit, NOT the mixing.

i remember a good 8 or 9 years ago, when i first got into ukg scene etc and i never really rated ez as a dj, from hearing his at the time on freek fm, and a few mix tapes...
well that year was at hollywoods... for new years eve,,, and heard my first ever ez set live...
well.. i was amazed...
just listened to the whole set and was soo impressed with how his tune choice, and ability to get the place to an emazing atmosphere..
what a night.. made me really apreciate ez and what he did...

Yes they may have the music (probably on a laptop or one of those big tables like C Moyles has with all the music loaded in already)..but ask them to mix two tracks in together and they'd be fooked.

Do they keep the crowd lively? Yes.
Its the same principle mate.
A Prime example for a totally shit DJ - who cant mix, or drop tunes proper is BASS GENERATOR. He's a newcastle lad if I remrmeber right but the Scottish idolise him. Only because he plays "crowd pleasers".
Exactly the same goes for Ratpack too. They are Shit. Both technically and musically but people love em just for the name.
The best advice to any budding dj is dont learn how to mix. Learn the tunes the crowd will kiss your arse for and then blag your way somehow on to the decks. superstardom will await you.

Any one can play a set FULL of crowd pleasers.. I do at bigger events and the crowd love it..
If you clang a mix (not that I do!) and the next tune that drops is BIG.. then the clanger is forgotten about and the roof goes off
BUT.... the more musically minded and people well in to the scene 'hate' a crowd pleaser set and prefer the more experimental side
hence you will get slagged from both sides. From the crowd pleasing, loving chav's.. for playing different, unknown stuff... and the original heads who will slate you for always playing the same old BIG tunes.
its a vicious circle.

The principle may be the same..but someone who talks through a mic and says "the buffet is open..the buffet is open" in a Peter Kay stylie does not qualify as a DJ in my books.
