Default ANYBODY KEEP SPIDERS?

I have just bought a Mombassa Golden Starburst Tarantula.

It is a heavy web spinner, very agile and very aggressive if its in danger.

In its natural habitat in Eastern Africa it lives in shanty towns in its own made silk lined burrows feeding on mice and cockraches.

A piccy of my new purchase.

Anybody else keep them? Pics?

FFS!

Honestly mate, i don't know how you can sleep with that in the house!

I'm terrified of spiders but in a way, i'm quite interested in them... Was it expensive?

The spider has no interest in escaping from its cage as it is cosy in its own made habitat.

In the wild the spider makes a refuge, lines with silk weave and only moves a maximum of 10cm from its refuge for the majority of its lifespan purely to feed, totally harmless and not interested in escaping and running up to the bedroom.

The spiders range from Ł10 to Ł300 for rare Goliath Bird Eaters that grow up to a span of 35 cm

The girl said "no chance" to that one.........

Cool.

I watched a program about a lad that collected them and he had a room filled with boxes of spiders. In the middle he had a large glass case where he kept his bird eater. Thing was MASSIVE black with orange stipes on it's legs.

Can you handle it? The spider..

95% are not able to be handled. Most have irritating brissels on their abdomens that can cause allergic reactions and rashes, however far from life threatening.

Poisonous spiders and frogs are illegal to import into this country.

Next time you are in the hood, you will have to breeze past and grab a gander goose at the new purchase.

Its amazing how people are so scared.

The scare is the shock factor of a field spider legging it across the living room floor scaring the whole familly and the dog........

Tarantulas move maybe once in 4 days to grab food and then back to their refuge.

Not scary and big enough to see at all times.

Such a low maintenance pet too, drop a cricket in every 4 days and fill up the water tray for humidity balance and bobs your uncle...

For a typical spider you need a plastic or glass cabinet with a suitable feeding lid with dimensions of 12x12x12 (inches) only.

Heat mat is needed under one half of the tank.

3-4 inches of substrate (treated peat) and a small water tray or sodden sponge for humidity.

and away you go.

One cricket per week and a clean out once a month.

done...

I have a spare tank that I prep ready for the spider then simply swap the tank into the fresh prepped tank, no need for plant pots, or tins, or "shit Ive dropped it"...
