Gonna say I'm certainly not mechancial expert but didn't think (especially Zetec in Escorts) any were variable valve timing - CVH is 8v and Zetec twin cam so must have 16 valves - why else would they have a 16v badge on them! lol

Puma had a variable valve 16v lump, 1.7 - Yamaha developed the cylinder head.

Imaloverofcars - Zetec uses two cams and is 16v - hence DOHC 16v.

Zetec-E and Zetec-R (except the Focus ST170 engines) don't use variable cam timing. Zetec-R in the Focus ST170 has variable cam timing, although it's (wrongly) badged as a Duratec. Focus RS engine is also a Zetec-R without variable valve timing and again it's badged, confusingly, as a Duratec (it's not - Ford branding confusion, like a "Zetec" trim spec diesel ).

Zetec-s Yamaha-derived 1700 engine has variable timing as mentioned. Don't know if the 1250, 1400 and 1600 variants are Yamaha-influenced but as mentioned, don't think they include VCT.

Exactly that mate, thanks

Cheers for all your answers, thanks for your first reponse foreignRS, I just wanted it a bit clearer in my head - I know my Zetec is 16v and started to doubt myself when someone tried argued that it isn't and is VVTI, knew I wasn't going mad - so asked the question on here as people knowledgable on here - that ok with you? Could say whats the point of most of the posts on here, least mine car related

Anyway thanks!

Sorry maybe I could've worded my question better - I meant I've never heard of Zetecs being VVTI and not 16v, and was pretty damn sure I was right in thinking mine was 16v and certainly not VVTI - thats all. You've all proved to me that I'm not bloody stupid after all, thanks

This might qualify?

It's a zetec, not a 16V DOHC and probably has VVT.

On the same thoughts but i know its not a Zetec; i'm sure I remember my mothers Honda civic has VVT or some cam trickery that makes it run on 8 valves most of the time, then just opens up the other 8 valves (to total 16) when you cane it. IIRC something like that anyway
