Default wobbly wheel problem

just trying to diagnose a small problem with my car, 4x4

i noticed when the mot guy was moving it around at the garage, when he braked the front wheels seemed to move forward an inch

i have also noticed i get rather nasty vibration under light braking from about 60mph. It causes the steering wheel to wobble pretty violently.

also if i am moving, very slowly in traffic, and brake very very gently to come to a stop, you can feel the brakes kind of 'pulsing' like they are warped. you know...like one part of the disc is more effective than the next part?

the car is polybushed front and rear, apart from the front tca's i think.

any suggestions?

are you sure the wheels moved forward? not inwards to the rear of the arch? i would check all the bushes mate. might be worth clening the discs up before you replace them. may just be a build up of material on the disc.

just noticed the wheels moving when he braked.

will check all the bushes this weekend, just wondering if there are any 'common' ones to look for

Sounds like classis warpped disks to me.

There is some movement in the wheels when braking or accelerating if you have bushes.

Could be the anti roll bar bushes where the ARB bolts to the chassis legs under the car.

Alex
it did seem a little too much movement when braking

i kinda guessed the discs might be warped, just wanted to check the other suspension parts before, going out and buying new discs.

can you polybush these?

i have 2 sets as the ones on there were replaced not long before i bought the car.

i take it they have a bush where it meets the subframe, and one through which the ARB passes

need to check the bottom ball joints too as the front drivers wheel can knock on hard bumps

yes you can,i had to do mine, but if you are gonna do it i'd get two new arms.like you say if ones knocking then it will need it.but as its a shitty job i'd do them both and get it out the way.

does sound like warped disc too but the movement is the arms for definate.and thats not a good thing and do the arm asap if the balljoint is fucked.if it shits itself you will write the car off happened to a few people i know.it snapped and sent them off the road.

I thought it was the ARB on the Cossie setup that controls the position of the wheel in the arch (in terms of forwards and backwards movement anyway). The TCA just keeps it spaced out width ways the right amount. i.e. if you disconnect the ARB there is nothing holding the wheel in place properly and it will swing forwards and backwards?

you are right. but the arb goes through a bush in the tca

quite normal for std bushes, even when new, to see the wheel move. scary really. easily eliminated with polybushes.

there was a case where a sierra failed on the arb bushes, the garage fitted new bushes, it sitll failed

but if it means swapping the amrs about it's better than having hte jint fall apart and kill the car
inners are not as important but if you have them get them done at the same time, pain in the arse, proerply

don't forget to get the tracking done aferwards

i've had a set of polys that have been on several cars, and seeing as the last car i trasnfered them onto i have had for 9 years now, thats a long time for a bush to b sitting around, let alone working

so i think it's fair to say it's going to outlast the car
