Ebay - StealBay - free advice to avoid being scammed...
I have recently been scammed on StealBay for over £400.
I tried to buy one of those stainless Nokia's. I made sure that i paid using Paypal so that i was protected if i was scammed.
I did all the usual cross checking of feedback, made sure they were as geniune as possible. Ayway long story cut short. I was scammed not once, but flipping twice! How unlukcy.
First time was a bit wierd. Phone line cut, incorrect address listed etc etc. Thought no problem, Ebay (sorry StealBay) and paypal will sort it out.
Second time (about a week later!) i won another auction for the same phone. I paid again using Paypal (thinking this was safe and secure) only for StealBay to serve me with a TKO notice stating that the users account had been accessed fraudulently and that they had closed it down.. flippin great. I couldnt access any of his details or zip.
StealBay washed there hands completely of both cases, so i thought fine, Paypal will pick up the fraud issues.
Here comes the free advice.
Paypal will refund you in full, only IF the users account has the money in it. If it is empty there is a max limit of £120. They then kindly take out £15 for an 'admin fee'. Thanks for that.
So for my first scam i got back £105 - lost £100 there.
I got the same back for the second scam - no im down by over £200
TIP: Ensure that you clear out your paypal account and MAKE sure that you pay for any high value goods soley off your credit card.
Unfortunately i paid for the first phone with credit in my paypal account. I have no way of trying to get back the balance past £105.
The second time i had an empty paypal account, so it was paid via my credit card.
I reported the fraud to Citi card who are dealing with it and have credited me the balance. So now im back to £100 down.
So remember, empty your payapl account regularily and note that paypal will only protect you up to £120 less £15.
Ensure you do all your checks beforehand. I now call these fools beforehand, and get landlines and addresses and try and check them out.
Dont get scammed by these robbin crooks!

Ebay are simply useless - they dont want to know in the slightest. Wouldnt release any details to me. I have reported the first one to the old bill and hopefully they will release any detials and prosecute.
Paypal are also washing their hands and have craftily reduced there liabilty down. I always thought i was protected by using paypal for the ful lamount. but sadly not.
I wil lstill use ebay, but will by more cautious in future

PassionFord Post Whore!!
This is why you should always fund paypal purchases via a credit card rather than bank transfer or debit card.
The latter two don't have the protection of a credit card afforded under the consumer credit act.
That's why paypal have that extra page with those pathetic reasons why you should use a bank transfer.

I would love to know how it stands under this consumer credit act. I suppose that Paypal dont lend you the money and that is their cop out - hence leaving the credit cards people to pick up pieces.
Remember, clear our your paypal accounts and pay solely with credit!!! dont get caught!

I didnt relise there was as many people getting scammed.
Trouble is it seems to be genuine people getting screwed.
I am now emailing for landlines and addresses. if they say no, they i dont want to trade.
If i were buying a car i would what chapter and verse on the details before i even bothered going to see them.
Egay - i like that. Not as good as my StealBay (tm) though... or GreedBay (r).
Robbin Barstewards!
