Default ST170 ENGINE MODS WHAT BHP TO EXPECT ?

Hi all,

I'm thinking about using the ST170 engine in my project rather than a Zetec.

Looking for about 225 bhp

Would I get this using 45 throttle bodies / management and a flowed head with standard cams ditching the vv timing.

Or would I be better off using the Zetec with bv head / cams / 45 throttle bodies / management ???

Pros and cons pls.

Cheers.

You've more chance of being struck by lightening...

Dave at Retro Ford has done 4 cars now with ST170 motors, one was standard on throttle bodies and management with the VVT being controlled by the shift light output on the ECU....

Made 170bhp..

The second was his own development car, on motorcylce throttle bodies and management, made 170bhp

The next one was on a similar set up with a vernier pulley on the exhaust cam, made just over 180

The last one had the VVT removed, CAT Cams, Verniers, Bike Bodies, management, made 195bhp

To get the bhp up near 225 you will have to re-work the head, and bear in mind its very nicely done already, a set of cams, verniers and the key seems to be in raising the compression, a decent exhaust manifold and you may have to go to big valves....

But bear in mind when you get to this stage you need to look at things like rod bolts etc to beef up the bottom end a little...

Look into the supercharger route it will give you what you want without taking the engine apart

Worth a look

225 bhp is not difficult from the normal 2.0 ltr ZETEC. Check out Dunnell engines for ideas.

I know of a 230bhp St engine which from what I remember was still on a standard bottom end.

As mentioned its all in the headwork and I know this particular one will be as it was done by Nick Waples

No point using nitrous as thats not genuine power, you want something thats there everytime you press the pedal

Looks like I willl be going the Zetec route then with TB's, management, bv head and cams.

Just wondered how tunable / easy it would be to get more power from the ST170 engine.

Thanks everyone.
