Default quick pc question

my current system is as follows:

Amd 1700+ 1.4ghz cpu
socket a mboard
80gb ide HD
512mb of ram

thing is it keeps crashing, i replaced the hard drive with a new one, done a memory check (ram is fine) so have put the fault down to either the cpu or mboard.

my question is this. should i buy a new socket A mboard, for about 30 quid.

or should i consider upgarding to a new 64 bit system, socket 939, sata 2 and pci express.

i dont really use the system for games, but for internet, itunes and some simple programs.

is it worth it??

any advice appreciated, just unsure as to the 'real' advantages of these new systems for programs other than gaming etc

cheers

would i see any difference bewteen my old machine and a socket 939 machine?

i'm concerend if i buy a mboard with 939 and a new processor etc, and ram, whether it will be out of date soon(AGP and IDE), and whther i should go for a newer spec motherboard(PCI-E and sata 2)?

dont really wanna spend more than 200 quid.

i still use agp

my pc is for gaming though and mine only just runs it

but its fast as im running stat raid

if you want a fast pc get a board that supports stat raid

2 hard drives are better than 1

yep socket 939 will be more than enough for you.

Its what my pc has got(Athlon 64 x2 4200), you got your 4 ram slots, pci-express slots, and normal ones for sound card, modem or whatever.

Mines fast as fck though(above processor with 2gigs of ram) im flying

Xr4 what graphics card you got then? because i know you play battlefield on it and 2142 is a very demanding game graphically unless of course your playing it with half arsed graphics/frame rates

Gefore Radeon?...... Radeon are ATI mate

And a 6800GS should run everyting on MAX not medium as its an high-end card. And good luck getting an 8800, you'll need it.

Now on to your problem, getting a new CPU might not fix the crashing. My advice would be find out what makes it crash and then fix it. It could over heating and crashing...have you checked you CPU tempreture and fan speed setting? Has the thermal paste on the CPU dried up? if it has it wont transfear the heat away from the CPU properly. Is the GPU screwed down SOLID in its slot?

Id really find out what causing it before any upgrade.
