Default Audi A3 wont start

Got a problem with our Audi A3, its a 1998 model S-reg, thought someone on here may have an idea

Car was sat for about 2 months with no use, and obviously came back to find a dead battery.

Tried jumping it but it just cranks over and doesn't fire.

Have checked for spark, its sparking.
Have renewed the petrol with fresh stuff.

Now, the problem is it isnt fueling. When you turn the ignition on the fuel pump doesnt prime, and when you try to crank it no fuel comes through.

Have tested the circuit and there is no power going to the fuel pump fuse, so the problem lays between the battery and the fuse.

In between these is the relay? I've replaced that to no avail.

If you give a live feed to the fuse then the car starts and idle's happily, so the fuel pump works!

The problem is definately before the fuse but not the relay, what can it be?
Any other fuel cuts on there?

had the aa out twice now, first time they said low oil ( I wasn't there at the time) and the second time they tested it all and said must be the fuel pump relay.

and now here i am, it aint the relay

may get em out again tomorrow but will try audi

Just had a word with out master tech here mate, he said its difficult to say, but could relate to the ignition switch

he said try moving the key round in it, as usally where then go, they dont spring back and the normal turning movement in the barrel from 1-2-3 feels strange

Gonna be difficult mate, but might be worth sticking it on diagnostic to see if it brings up anything, ive got the software for it but not that close

thanks for that mate, as far as i can remember the barrel felt normal, but i will give it a go!

would what he suggests still be true bearing in mind it works when giving a live feed to the fuel pump fuse?

Guess I'll have a small play tomorrow then get the aa out again! although i guess now its this complicated they wouldnt be able to suggest much, other than a tow to audi?

true, ive not got the wiring diagrams for it infront of me and evreything

the other suggestion is that the feed from the control unit that powers the relay is at fault, or its not earthing

might be worth checking the ECU connections .. as far as I remember there is a live feed from the ECU to the fuel pump relay.....

JUMP starting some Audis with another vehicle can blow something in the ecu but jumping with a jump/booster pack is ok!

that would be good mate thanks for all your help!

having a little trouble reading the diagram for the ecu, is J17 (fuel pump relay) the one above the black box at the top of the diagram?

if so what is it? how can i test it?
i assume its a pin out? should it be earthed or live when ign is on? or dont it say?

ygpm !

just to clarify as the image is a little fuzzy, out of the ECU on pin 4 is it (?) there is a wire running to the fuel pump relay, and this provides the power to the relay?

so the power to the relay comes from the ecu? cant see what colour the wire is, is it on there?

ah okay, unforunately not, boring 1.6 ! It's the early 1998 one as well apparantly, WX chassis number or something? had this little problem yesterday trying to get the right relay, turns out they changed late 98 or something, and mines the earlier.

gonna be fun, can hardly get in there as it is, let alone trace the wires

sorry, is it purple or white, or purple/white?

Just had a quick look at the relay, I've got pins 85,86,87,30

looking at the diagram, pin 87 should be live yeah?

(sorry for all the qs)
