Army Lads, how old is too old?
Just wondering if any of the forces lads on here can help.
I am 27(turned in August) and after a year out from my normal world of IT in which I have travelled LOTS I have been thinking about a career in the Army. I wanted to join when younger but I just fell into the normal life cycle and settled down. Thing is I bagged a job in New Zealand as a mechanic and done great(cars were always my real passion), worked on ALL sorts like trucks, buses, tractors, grading machines, diggers the lot. Being blunt I fucking loved it, and kinda wondering if there would be any scope at all with joining that with the Army, being 27 and all...........
Any input?

You'll need to join the REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers)

i thought about this earlier in the year and went to the army carears office. had a chat with them and did some aptitude tests. the plan was to join up as an ammo tech and hopefully end up doing bomb disposal. i'm 27 aswell and thought i needed a new direction in life. but after a few weeks thinking about it i thought i was better off where i was. i still get the urge because some of my m8s are marines and alot of my family were in the milatary but at this age i dont think i could take all the shit without losing my temper! it would be a massive shock to the system to not be completely independant. just something to think about.

Thanks Wrighty, good insight. I do have a mate who's Dad and 2 Brother's have/are in Army. Just seems to me it has a lot going for it, apart from the odd obvious stuff.
Think I will need to go talk to as many of them as poss.....

there are still a lot of oppertunities at our age in the armed forces. more in the navy and air force than the army though! but the army air core is often forgotten about and has more oppertunities than the army. hope you find an answer cos its shit having that itchy feet feeling!

mate you must be mad if you want to join the army , join the Airforce as an aircraft tech and get paid more, get a better trade for when you leave, shot at less and treated like an adult , also you get to go on the lash in a lot of nice places and get paid extra for it http://www.rafcareers.com/home.cfm
and lets face it, the army smell (hence the name pongo's) and are fick , and the navy, well.... nuff said

I wont take the bait for that one, of course IF he wants to polish windscreens for a living - he could be an aircraft tech in the army too!! work on some on some decent kit like the apache!! (that was too good to give the RAF!!)

The old rivalries are best eh?
Never even considered RAF to be honest, just always wanted the Army. Aircraft Tech sounds ok but I prefer heavy mechanics so not sure that would suit.
Thanks for the info all the same.

heavy mechanics?? Just tonight I have changed the engine and a propellor on a C-130K, a good old herc the props are 13' odd in diameter, and the engines are well over a ton each
sure the army lads have been on theese plenty of times to be fair, the REME lads are spot on normally, just a bit army-barmy , and why do you think it took so long to train the army to fly the apaches?? - "ere, woz vis lever do sarge? "

Army Barmy - That be another reason, I have never been quite all there, not sure I'd fit in anywhere but with the daft Army boys hahaha
In all seriousness I will have a good look at the RAF now mate, but there is more to my decision like when I leave I have a plan of what I would do and being an Aircraft Tech isn't what I need for that.
