Hi ollie

I'm not sure for definate, but I use TWS in my E39 M5. It is quite expensive, but for mine, it is the only approved oil.

Snag is the only place you can get it is from BMW, or direct from castrol classic oils.

To be sure, I will post on my BMW forum board if you want and let you know

Right - done that. I am right, it has to be TWS oil.

I suggest you buy it direct from Castrol Classicv oils. It works out an awful lot cheaper!!!

Unforuntately, the M3 is not 'most cars'.

Longlife 3 is not an approved oil for that engine

It should be run on Castrol RS (0w60 irrc)

Check on the castrol website!

Don't forget that Alex is a BMW technician and training consultatnt - he trains all the fitters/mechanics on new vehicles, so I think that his word about the choice of oil is VERY valid

He's wrong 100%, as were BMW for putting E46 spec oil in E36s. I'll await Oilman to confirm

"Do NOT use 10w-60 unless you have one of the following!

M43/CNG
S54
S62/E39 (Up to 02/2000)

If you do not have one of the above, you should be using the following:

0w-30, 0w-40, 5w-30 or 5w-40

As per the BMW Technical bulletin dated 1.11.2004.

Be careful out there as the Dealers don't read the bulletins either!"

Cant argue with that!

I would suggest that EIL is right, given that he runs not one, but two E36 M3's!

I bow to your judgement

Lol, I was put on to the fact BMW dealers were using the same oil for the E46 and E36, although the E36 does require the thinner oil and you can't be expected to remember everything, even working for BM

My BM dealer in Devon area (I wont name and shame) pretty much try to sell the fully synthetic bloody expensive oil for all the cars across their range!

Even the old ones!!!

I do not necessarily trust them with the decision, though in my case with the M5, it was a little easier, given that there is only one oil that I am allowed to use! Doh!
