I am a MCSE, MCSE+I, MCP, MCP+I and have a MCSE 2000 Gold Card.

After you get to a certain level, they aren't worth a toss.

Depends how you want to train really. You can either do online learning either self paced or instructor lead but these are very expensive...Well for the qualification im after anyway. Or buy the relevant books for the courses, study to you feel ready to take the exams equivilent for gaining the full qualification...all at your own pace.

My one you need 3 exams to gain full qualification.
first exam Ł88 and Ł40 for the first exam book.

From a support perspective, they are useful and do open doors towards job interviews. But in technical architecture, knowledge of togaf, zachman and project methodologies (e.g. Prince 2) are more useful.

However, in solution architecture, I think the MCSD is the requisite quali.

Did a couple a few years back but never renewed them! As above they are only useful for getting interviews... Most companies prefer experience over anything else!

This is true, which is why its a bonus being able to work in the field and work towards high certifications at same time.

You will also find that they become obsolete very quickly as new releases of Microsoft software is released. Also the large number of training books required is not cheap...

After looking through a MCSD training book a few years ago I found it was hard going as it was using enormous of Microsoft Waffle for commonly concepts.

IMHO good for ego's but real-world experience is worth far more.

I never bothered experience is usually better all they do is give you a base knowledge

plus some people I have met who have them are shocking when it comes to real world issues
