If you do buy one, buy an aftermarket warranty.
The more common isues are gearboxes (on the earlier cars) and if you're unlucky turbos (engine out job). Recently had the gearbox in mine repaired and if I'd had to pay for it, it would have cost me £4K.
Clutches aren't a strong point, standard brakes aren't any good for track use. Minor running issues (ie problems) include MAF sensor, diverter valves, top end oil leaks, EGT sensors.
Servicing is expensive if done at Audi (£250ish to £1100). Brakes (front and rear pads and discs) supplied approx £1200. Clutch fitted about £1100. Decent tyres approx £170 a corner.

I have an M5, and this is one of the few cars that truly worries me when I encounter one!!!LOL
Awsome car. Fuck all the problems. If you have to justify it, you will ever buy one. Just do it. Buying the M5 was the best thing I ever did.
When you have bought it, then drive it properly. If you have no intention of doing this, then dont buy one. Buy a diesel.
