If you really wanted to do it in situ you could remove the sump and unbolt the big ends then withdraw the piston and rod from the top once you have removed the head.

that sounds a lot easier?would it be easy to remove a zetec head when its in a series one engine bay.limited space

If I were doing the job i would rather remove the engine, it might be faster.
As above, its POSSIBLE to do in the car, but given that at the same time you are likely to be also changing bearings and probably wanting the crank polished, i would take it out personally.
Personally i'd whip the sump off, whip the rod caps off and have a squint off the bearings/crank. If there good i'd leave the engine in a just whip the head off.
