Default BBC1, 9pm : "9/11 : The Twin Towers"

In a week full of programmes marking the forthcoming fifth anniversary of the 11 September attacks, this is probably the best. Compiled using eyewitness accounts and transcripts of conversations, 9/11: the Twin Towers tracks the events of that terrible day from inside the World Trade Center. It's a gripping, but of course often sad, litany of acts of bravery, and of resignation, too, as workers trapped within the doomed building realised they were going to die and made final phone calls to their loved ones. Firefighters who survived the onslaught recall trudging up smoke- filled stairwells, while office workers remember their perilous escapes. The atrocity is set within the context of a woeful catalogue of US security failures, highlighted in withering detail in the 9/11 Commission report, and how lessons were not learnt after previous al-Qaeda attacks on American targets. As one government official says, "We never even imagined it, therefore we weren't prepared."
This is gonna make me cry, I know it......

I don't mind admitting it at all - doesn't make me embarassed, just cos I am a guy....

I watched the film "Flight 93" and there were a couple of points in that I cry'd at. The overwhelming saddness just took hold of me and I had to do it....

So utterly, utterly tragic and so emensly sad

Plus, I meant to add, it actually really scared me seeing it on film, cos the opening scenes are set in the real Newark Liberty Intl Airport - the airport I flew in and out from in June this year. That scared me, as I recognised the layout instantly, and I have queued at those ticket desks, and gone though those metal detectors, and down those hallways!!!!

Argh

If I'd be sensible and checked the listings I could have set it to record, I'm fascinated with these 911 documentries that are being shown.

Oh well, thanks for the heads up, hopefully I can catch the second half.

First part over - gotta wait for the poxy news to finish now

As predicted, it's already got me a lump in my throat The guy who kept going back to save people, then saved the people in the MetLife offices, and was never seen again Such bravery and compassion....

And the guy who survived Flight 175 hitting the South tower and was saved by a fellow worker - again, made me choke....

And the guy who stopped to persuade a guy to carry on going down, even tho he had never met him....

So utterly sad.

But it's gonna be horrific when the buildings start to collapse

But those scenes - the scenes from real camera's there and then when the planes (11 and 175) hit the two towers. These scenes - seen a hundred times already - still scare me everytime I see them. It's incomprehensible that this could actually happen, and even tho you know it's real and that it's being filmed by real camera's being held by real people, it's like it's a film.... I hope to god tho that I NEVER see anything like this ever again in my lifetime. I never want to have to see something like this happen again..... One of mankinds darkest days

brings it all back i was decorating when it happened,i looked at tv from the wall and thought it was a film that was on then i saw the text across the bottom! turned it up and listened and they said accident, put a lump in my throat.then i see the 2nd plane go in and i just sat there not believing my eyes.it brought my guts to a bubble and felt so sick! thats one day i will never forget and i feel for every single person who lost family there. the firemen and other emergency services are so brave and i respect them so much for all they do.shame some died or are ill now due to it.
it now makes me very that we are living with these wankers around us.

Tell you what.

Those tossers who think its all a big conspiracy ought to hang their head in shame as much as the people who support this shit. I cant beleive the idiots would think that american people would do that to themselves just so they can attack the east....and some say for oil... FFS get a grip..

Upset and mad after watching that. Ive not watched anything about the twin towers for a while as i do get some mad that people can do this. It is worse than WAR. In war you are after then enemy sadly killing some innocent people, those attack just killed masses of totally innocent people going on with day to day life..

All i say is Go bush, Go blair and continue the fight against terror...mistakes will be made but we must carry on to protect ourselves from this happening...
Like the guy at the end said, god forbid if they get nuclear weapons...

It did make me cry, J was very quiet too, I think if he spoke he would've broke down

Heart wrenching to think you were trapped and couldn't get hold of your loved ones to tell them you love them.

It was the man who was talking to his wife on the phone when she said 'I'm scared' (in fact thats bringing tears to my eyes now) that made me break down in tears, and Harry who stayed with Victor and died with him.

I don't think any of us will ever forget that day, where we were and what we were doing at the time, absolutely tragic

No offense mate, but in WW2 (on both sides) and countless other wars, they deliberatley bomb the civilians.

Its wrong as fuck to do what they did, but to say they dont deliberatly attack civilians in war is wrong.

When you see the word "Strategic" before Bombers or Missiles, thats what it means.

They call them "Tactical" weapons if meant to be used against military targets.

even though it's a tragic event , i love the real life spectacle of seeing the planes crash into the buildings. it's just phenomenal to see the speed at which they plough into them and the energy of the crash when all the fuel explodes. absolutely astounding. is that just me?

that doesn't mean that i don't feel any sadness for anybody involved.

I know what you mean. Destruction on that scale is always absurdly fascinating. It's pretty morbid but I think it's in our nature to be compelled by shock and death, it stops us being too complacent.

I thought it was a very well put together programme.
The one bit that had me and put a lump in my throat was the moment the building collapsed.

Totally shocking.

Lee R. A good point of view mate.

Missed this...which is a shame cos it sounds better than the other ones i've been watching lately.

I'm glad its finally got to the point where they've opened it up to more people- sad, sickening etc but no words can really describe what happened that day.

Gotta agree with Lee R, makes me fuckin sick to think people are even doubting it, ill- educated dicks

I have the utmost sympathy for those that lost friends or loved ones on 911. For those that lost their lives, that is WHY I put up with so much shit, and do what I do.

OK, lets try this again. Look up Operation Northwoods. A plan, that whilst never carried out, (it was approved all the way until to the top until JFK saw it ) was planned by Americans, to kill Americans, and blame it on Cuba. It is historical FACT.

Then go to the FBI website. Look up the 10 Most Wanted. Find Usama Bin Laden , and see if he is wanted for 911? Have they just forgotten to update it?

And even when the two Chairpersons of the Kean 911 Comission say themselves, that information supplied was false, then do we need to worry? And what about all the testimony from people that the 911 Comission Report ignored?

And back to topic. Two towers. collapsed ~10 floors per second. 80% of the building totally pulverised by 20% of the building. ye cannae change the laws of physics Jim.
