But with bulbs isnt it just it either works or doesnt, not half on like that Headlighs are fine by the way, so i think that rules out the bulb holder?

on the mk6 the sidelights come on with dim dip, not on their own.
when you turn to lights full on they will go a bit brighter again.
and of course full beam.
basically your drivers side bulb has gone, take it out to check, but 99% sure its just that.
its also best to replace the bulds as a pair, as they can be different shades and that is also an MOT failure
