Default Hard Drive choice......(again!!)

So, its out of 2. Which one shall I buy??

Western Digital Caviar SE16. 16mb. 7200rpm

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=256891

Seagate Barracuda 250gb. 16mb. 7200rpm

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Produ...oductID=408897

The Seagate one mentions 8ms access time, compared to 8.9ms on the Western Digital. What is better?

Also, Seagate refers to 'NCQ', what is that?

Other than that, there doesn't appear to be alot between them.

When you say that I won't notice the difference on a SATA drive, is that you saying they are shit?

get the sata drive that spins at 10,000 rpm rather than the 7200

forget the name now

sata IS better than IDE as its a newer architecture

You wont go wrong with either of those 2. They are virtually the same spec drives so ignore the 0.9 millisencond access time difference.

The WD 10,000 Raptor drives are awesome but so expensive for such a small GB size.

If i was rebuilding my system, i would buy a WD Raptor drive as my windows/main hdd and have either the seagate or the wd 250gb as a storage/backup drive

The Seagate is the better build quality. Currently running the 320Gb version myself.

Our current HD is a Western Digital Caviar SE 200gb HD. I notice that it has an 8mb cache and is described as SATA150. The replacement will have a 16mb cache and is a SATA300, will I notice these differences? I don't play games, but do sometimes notice things running slowly (even with a 3.0ghz P4HT processor). Will this improve the speed things open/run?

Also, is the OEM aspect of the name significant here? I know what OEM means usually, but cannot see the significance.

OEM just means it comes in a cardboard box rather than a shiny retail one. The kit itself isn't any different.

As above, buy the Seagate, personally I wouldn't buy the 10K for a home system, they're noisy fookers.

SATA is a faster bus than IDE so if you can, get SATA but you will need to make sure you have SATA connectors on your mainboard.

Cheers

Matt

You'll really not notice any difference between them.

My old HD is a Western Digital Caviar SE 200gb 8mb RAM SATA150 (I think).

The machine is good spec, is there a way that I can find out if it will support SATA300 without pulling it apart again?

NCQ (Native Command Queuing) and TCQ (Tagged Command Queuing) are features created to improve the hard disk performance by re-ordering the commands sent by the computer to the hard disk drive

OK, cool. It looks like I will definately go for the Seagate one, I just need to make sure my mother-board can do SATA300. I guess its kind or irrelevant anyway, if I buy it and it only runs at SATA150, it's no worse than what I have.

I can't find anything on the mother-board to give any clues as to what it is. The only number I can see is D33005 and I don't think thats significant here.

I guess if I buy SATA300, I won't be any worse off than if I bought SATA150, even if my mother-board will only run SATA150?

easiest way to identify your mobo without opening the machine is to use free prog called cpuz http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

a sata300 drive will run at sata150 on a sata150 mobo. you just have to move a jumper on the back of the HD to set it to sata150.
