Default FAO Fagin/Photography people!!

I have a Canon EOS 300d and I want to use it in some of the manual modes at National Day on Sunday, I have used it for a month or so now on the automatic modes which I am ok with, but obviously, these are not the best for shooting cars on a race track (sports mode is too fast a shutter speed and doesn't give a very good perseption of motion)

What mode and settings would you recommend for moving cars on track?

I have the EF-S 18-55mm and EF 75-300mm lenses!

I think the available modes are the same as most other Canon EOS cameras!

Hmm..
This would be almost impossible to describe and discuss corrcetly without correct understanding of the camera's feature list....

One that will work with almost any SLR is to setup with a tripod (Quality please, not some diy three twigs and some rope affair ) and select a relatively slow shutterspeed whilst framing the subject, fire the shutter and pan "Smooothlllyy" across with the subject.

This will freeze the subject and blur the background and gives the best action/motion appearance that i personally know how to do..

However.. best to wait for Fagin Bailey as he appears to have a decent grasp of that cameras ability nicely and makes me jealous

Well from what I can see the TV mode is the one to use, I guess then it's just playing around with the shutter speed to get it right! Is this what others recommend?

(I'm now waiting for ther police to be called as i've been shooting cars on my road for the last few hours )

Depends what you want... it's going to vary a lot depending on subject motion, composition etc.

For quicker things, I'd use servo autofocus, with the telephoto, open it right up, and use the EV comp to 'fine tune'... What Stu says is right, but it can be tricky to get the subject 100% clear every time. Plus you're on digital, so you can see if it's going to look right with a couple of test shots!

Servo AF is only available on the preset "sports mode" on the 300d

I want to get a bit more "motion" in my shots as you can see, the standard sports mode is too quick on the shutter:

Ok, failing that then, decide on a specific shot that you want (coming out of a corner for example), switch to manual focus and pre-focus the area, then you might be able to alter the shutter speed as you like, and see what suits?

I don't know the camera well at all I'm afraid :-(

Poor example, but http://www.exxale.demon.co.uk/photo/cor1.jpg - That's done with a 1/16th speed, following the car slightly, except the sun came out at the last second and cocked the metering up lol
