Got a 325 myself mate. If you are in the market for a good solid car, then buy one without mudflaps fitted. The mudflaps are rust magnets. I thought my front wings were mint but when I accidentally ripped off a mud flap I found the arch rotted behind where the flop had been mounted!

If it's anything like my 325 it'll be a nice comfy car, great to drive and very responsive. But please please please be careful in the wet with it if you're new to RWD.

Also try www.e36coupe.co.uk as their forum is alright.

Never used to like BMWs till i went out in a mates 1998 328 sport. IT was bloody impressive! Supposed to have been lightly tuned and felt so strong, brilliant build quality too.

Get a 328 sport, all the kit including 3.0 suspension bar the interior, etc. Vadar seats were M3 only. Good car, Spikey on here has an auto, but I'd go manual for fun. Best of both worlds

As said up there, go to www.e36coupe.co.uk, and search for 328i Sport, will tell you everything you need to know

In particular with this model, be aware of the Nikasil Issue, which will be explained on the other forum.

A good thing to do when looking at one though, is grab the last 7 digits of the vin, and give BMW UK a call, they'll be able to tell you shitloads about the car, servicing, work done etc... even down to every option ticked when the first owner bought the thing brand new

It's sport, IS was 318. All M3s had vadars apart from gaylord convertibles, some were cloth though. If they dont have them, apart from the gaylords, they ain't M3s

It's called the 328i Sport, Vaders came in the M3 3.0l's, and the EVO's, but not in the verts or saloons...

Nikasil is a problem with the bore lining of the cylinders, the high sulpher content in our fuel was wearing away the linings, as they were made of Nikasil... causing premature engine wear and ultimately terminal breakdown, these engines were replaced in March 98 iirc with Alusil blocks...

But also be aware, some cars are running on Nikisal engines at well over 100k miles and not missing a beat...

A compression test is needed to be sure before buying a nikisal block.

Either way, if you do buy one and it goes pop, recon engines for these are pretty readily available, just always budget for them

As per Nakasil, mate has a 328 Sport, 92000 when he bought it and has ripped the absolute arse out of it and it's 117000 miles now and never had a block change and is perfect. He was paranoid about it before he bought one

Just do it mate I did it and never looked back

Although, i do miss the surge of power from a turbo but i don't miss the unreliablity issues you get with Fords

I've got a 325i Coupe 95 with 160k, (touch wood) haven't had no major problems with it in the pass 3/4 years of ownership

Arches can start to go if there not cleaned

Bit of bodywork on the rear, between the boot lid and bumper

And around the rear lights

Not quite bodywork but check rear brake pipes round fuel tank as well - prone to rusting.

Rear trailing arm bushes prone to deterioration giving quirky handling.
Front wishbone bushes and ball joints ( ball joints can give a similar effect to warped discs ).
Rear shock mounts going can lead to a clunk over bumps.
They seem to be "hard" on their suspension I think for the mileage so most cars would benefit from a refresh.

I know its not a 3 Series...or even in the same class but I've got a 91 J Plate 525i SE , 2.5 24v Staright 6 so its a 'similar' engine.

Its an quality boat!! Its just turned 197'500 miles and goes like a steam train! 115-135mph down the Autobahns last week for a good 15-20 minutes and 1000 miles round Germany it never missed beat!!

Build quality is Compared to a Ford.

My Dad's got a 02 E46 325Ci and its a beaut!

328 sport is sooooooooooooo smooth, it's like driving silk

soo quiet,

yeah i have the auto, so loose some of the arse out action, but then i like it due, to the fact there's less chance me smashing it up...

as noted, probably not as fast as the m3, but still a quick car, once ya foot is down

I've got the same as Spiky but in Boston Green, and I love it to bits.
Eats motorways with ease

Spiky, have you had yours flat out yet? What speed did you get?
I chickened out at 130 on a certain toll in the midlands the other day

I've recently sold my 3dr Cosworth and bought a E36 M3 Evo. Always had RS's (still got my Series 1 RS Turbo too) but the M3 came up and was te right car at the right price. It's a 1996/P reg coupe in Estoril Blue with 48'000 miles and full BMW service history and i'm well pleased with it .... i'd certainly recommend one !!!

You won't be disappointed with a 328 Richard.

could you not stretch your budget to an E46 328Ci or 325Ci? E46's are worlds above the 36's for refinement and comfort etc and look better imo... but then i am biased
