I didn't think they even entered into discussions about the fines. Once issued you pay it, that's it.

geuine reason this

old man broke the engine/gearbox

i parked it up in september 05
tax ran out in feb 06
sent the sorn off feb 06
didn't get a letter back
didn't get a sorn reminder
called up in april 06 to ask if it was sorn
they said no
i sent off another sorn
got a letter in may 06 saying "you owe us Ł96"
sent a letter may 06 recorded delivery explaining the situation AND enclosing the reocvery from where the box broke down to my house AND said the only time the car had been moved was in dec 05 when it was STILL LEAGAL when it went 100 yards to my new house
made it proper long and detailed with EVERY bit of information i could think of
got a letter back saying "ok, fair enough, you need to sorn your car, here's the form"

so, it all depends on how long you had it unsorned for and you can always say you posted it off and they must never have recived it

We were going to try the old "i sent it to you but it must have got lost in the post" but it does say not to send it to them. So we then thought about saying we never had the reminder!

The DVLA tried to fine me Ł380 (Out of Court settlement) cause my car was spotted on the public highway while on a SORN and had no Tax. Actually, my car was on axle stands, stripped and outside my garage door on PRIVATE land. Had to send them copies of our land registry and photo's. They sent me a letter a few days after saying "With the information you have provided, we have decided to not continue with the proceedings."

Not even a apologie

This letter has worked twice for me.

addy here

RE xxxxxxx

To Whom It May Concern:

Please find enclosed a cheque for the amount which I have been Fined.
I would like to add that I would like you to check and double check your records and see that this car was scrapped and declared on 01/11/2003 at the address on your supplied paper work Before the cheque is banked/cashed.
I would also kindly request that I am supplied with methods which you can provide me in writing to how you prove that this paper work has not been lost in your system.
I know with your new system you provide me with a letter to confirm the status of my vehicle. However the scrapping of E655 CAN was prior to this so it was assumed that the declaration was all ok and I would hear nothing more.

I would like to say that I am not trying to be difficult, I just know that I am an organised person and things like this are dealt with as soon as possible.

If you do need to contact me in person please call

xxxxxx xxxxxxx or write to the above address.

Yours truly,

xxxxxxxxxxxxx

I allowed 4 weeks to which I HAD SENT A CHASE LETTER as I had not received any confirmation of this. Now I agree maybe I should have chased by phone. But I work 75 Hours some weeks I have other priorities. I have the letter sent.

I have so far although I was fined and I just didn't pay it, it was typically on a car I sold that I forgot to send the V5 off as I knew it was in storage.

Got fined Ł80 or something which I must remember to pay before I get hammered for some more

One question though

WHY WOULD YOU NOT DECLARE IT SORN'D??????

Doesnt cost fook all and if the car was on the road you would have to go to the post office so its not as if its making you go out of your way to do it

cant understand why people have gripes with the sorning system

I got an Ł80 fine from them a couple of years ago. I sent them a cheque as well as a letter stating that I had sent off the sorn decleration. Obviously , due to the royal mail not doing their job in a professional manner , I was now getting a fine for their cock-up.
They sent me back my cheque and let me off with the fine .
I have now learnt my lesson and I now sorn my car straight away to avoid this situation again.

I guess at the time , the fine was new and I didnt beleive that they would fine us for it , how wrong was I?

mr..... you owe us Ł178.00 in tax/charges/admin shite....

WTF...i rang them to explain and they just didnt want to know...at all.

its my fault for not knowing the situation apparently.....

i went to court and the magistrate was on my side luckly enuf and i gotr away with paying nothing.....

wen i bought my new shell for my turbo it was sorn but i didnt realise that me the new owner had to then declare it sorn aswell as soon as i had recieved the log book. 3months later i thought hmm, maybe i'll try sornng it, so did it online, then it come up they have no record for this car being taxed for past 5months or so and i could be fined heavily bla bla bloody bla. i was shitting myself for a few days but then thought ah well. havent heard anything from them since and that was 5months ago.

has anyone tried phoning dvla? fuck me their fone system is shit. very hard to get through to the right person. they are the biggest bunch of wankers alive and i'll stick to that statement

I got away with it. got rid of an Omega last December that may or may not have been sorn'd, can't remember.

However, I gave them the scrappies details, and they confirmed they scrapped it a couple of days after the SORN ran out, so they let me off.

Nothing dodgy, just genuinely forgot, the car has not moved from the drive in 2 years or so!

I got one too, The car cost me Ł150, Then I got caught doing 47 in a 40 so 3 points and a Ł60 fine then the sorn fine of Ł40 + back payment of about Ł27, I sent them a letter and a copy of the V890 or what ever it is but ive not heard back from them, Dont know if it will work or not

REF no. 455 P567 TAV

14/08/07

To Whom it may concern

On the 6th June 2006 I received a letter from you saying my car was of the road and not declared as SORN, This was quite a shock to me as I did declare it, At the begining of the year I took my car off of the road and bought the vehicle concerned to use whilst my car was being repaired, I declared my original car off the road (SORN). The road tax on the vehicle concerned was due to run out at the end of May. On the 30th of May I re taxed my original car, Whilst I was in the post office I picked up a SORN form, I filled it in the same day and sent it off to you, Before sending it I photo copied it as I trust royal mail about as far as I can throw them, Obviously it was a good idea as something is amiss here, Please find enclosed a copy of the original V890.

I am sending this letter by recorded delivery just so I know it gets to you

Thanks for your time

P. Jessop

Becarefull with that mate, if a car is not regestered to anyone and someone knows this then they could applay for a log book and they will get it unless you canprove you are the owner
