Default Mk2 Golf Gti 1.8 16v question

Basically the clutch went on my fiesta so i bought a cheap GTI as a runaround till i could be arsed to fix the fiesta.

The golf i bought had a proper fucked exhaust , the back box had rusted away from the system. This was obviosully causing alot of noise but the bloke told me it sounded fine before the exhaust went so i bought it thinking that if i sort the exhaust ive got my self a nice little bargain.

Got given an exhaust for it of a mate and bodged it on there but the noise was still there. Mate has a little listen and said it seems to be the wheel bearing. So i bought a wheel bearing and we changed it and the noise didnt go. Mate now reckons it must be the diff causing the noise .

Its fine under 20mph but once you go over that it gets very noisey and at high speed vibrates. When i go round left hand bends the noise dissappears ( which i why my mate thought wheel bearing as load is being taken off wheel) .

Just wondered if anyone had any more thoughts on what it could be and if anyone knows if diff bearings are easy to change on a golf or am i best off replacing the box if it comes down to it ?

Thanks

My MK2 16V Gti used to pop the left driveshaft out of the gearbox on a daily basis!
Also the main gearbox bearings are always going on them.

That Golf went like fook, but boy - what a pile of shite!!
