Default This months EVO, best FWD drivers car of all time....

A good read. Some legendary cars. 15 at the start....

They are:

205Gti 1.9
Lotus Elan
VW Corrado VR6
Clio Williams
Pug 106 Rallye
Fiat Barchetta
Honda Integra Type-R
Ford Puma
Pug 306 Rallye
Focus RS
VW Golf GTi
Mini Cooper S works GP
Renault Clio Trophy
Renault Clio 197

They did a top Six and then a winner....

any guesses on top 6 and the winner?

NO cheating if you have the mag already

oh and they said this about the winner

'Its a car as sweet and all-consuming as any I've experienced at any price, and as pure and Focused in its own way as any Porsche RS. Forget the accolade of greatest front-wheel-drive car. The ********** ranks as one of the truly great drivers cars of any kind'

I "thought" that the Clio Williams or the Pug 205 was going to win . Chip will be pleased with the verdict though .

They should have the original 60s mini cooper S in there, thats the best FWD drivers car, as demonstrated by 4 outright wins in a row at the monte carlo, something no other fwd car ever has done or ever will do!

Bunch of incompetent morons wouldnt know a good car if you smeared it in grease and drove it up their arse

No but being a good drivers car does mean that, and it is, it just also happens to be the most succesfull competition car of all time based on an almost unchanged design managing 40+ years of motorsport success AS WELL as being a great drivers car

It has to be the Integra. I've never driven anything else that has come close.

And a VW corrado will outhandle a RS1600i all day, every day. I can see this as my Ford Blinkers have fallen off.

I think it probably loses out on the "drivers car" bit either because:

A) at the time it came out it was actually relatively slow amongst its peers

B) the journalists at EVO know bugger all about cars and just write about whatever are made by the manufacturers who give them the best freebies are

Wastegate chatter

Says it all about how much they know about cars!

Bollocks. a standard vr6 corrado handles at best average compared to a standerd 16i, but lets not get into it on this thread. Have you ever driven a 16i that had fresh standard suspension, fresh standard bushes and a fresh steering rack etc? With the geometry properly set up?

Matt, in its day it was voted best handling front wheel drive car. better than the g60 version due to weight distribution i believe.

ive had mk3 escorts in the form of S1's and Corrados, both vr6 and g60.

corrado it is im afraid mate.

Considering it's totally different with differnt shocks, different tcas, a different diff, crossmember and rollbar set up then no, it doesnt really help.

A standard 16i is about 4 seconds quicker round donnington than a standard S1

Was the Corrado that you drove broken?

I admit, the Rs1600 I drove wasn't all new parts, but was in fiar condition. The corrado I drove was about 1,000,000 times better than it.

Bullshit! I know very little about how a car really works. BUT I know what makes a good drivers car from my experience of driving ALOT of cars under various conditions on all types of road and track.

I don't know my arse from my elbow when it comes to cam timing or phase sensors though!

Since when did EVO journos know fuck all about cars?

I'd say their methodical appraoch to testing, and their combined knowledge is fairly extensive. They've got Gordon Murray as a guest writer - clearly they should have asked you instead Chip.

In fact, I'd say they were about as independent as possible - if any of their fleet cars are serviced or worked on, they give an honest appraisal of the service recieved as possible, often negative if that is the case.

Car reviews are also fairly spot on - they always come in for criticism when it comes to their shootouts but they are obviously limited, and if I remember the article correctly, they certainly gave the old mini the deserved credit.

Stil, I can't understand where I've been going wrong all this time? I looked to EVO as a one of the finest motoring magazines available, when all this time I should have been looking to Total Vauxhall as the bastion of unbiased motoring journalism.

Well if you want even more proof that they know nothing about even driving the things, it sounds like they havent got the best drivers FWD car of all time in their top 15, surely that says it all
