Default E39 V8 Bimma

Anyone have any experience of these? common faults what sort of mileage they do, what needs to be looked out for and when etc

I quite fancy one of these but never even been in one let alone driven one.

Cheers for any info

Hi Andy,

Rated as one of the best cars BMW has ever made!!

I had the E34 and that was good, but the E39 was suppost to be in another league.

Its no cossy - as I'm sure your aware - its a big luxury motor and for that its superb!

I seriously considered one when I replaced the E34 but instead I got the scooby as I wanted somthing different not just the next newer modle

Cheers Alex! I know it no cossie but i would still keep that anyway.

Just after something to go to waitrose and back and generally smoke about in when i need to (dont need to commute in it so would prob use it less than the cossie )

Was looking at another datsun GTiR or a wrx estate or similar but figured i should go for something more grown up (but a little PIMP )

any othe suggestions welcome

I work for BMW & the v8s suffer a bit (not much)from overheating & burning oil they are relitivly cheap tho compared to 530 Sport or 528 Sport...Although IMHO if you have 528 or 530 Sport money buy one & forget about the v8 they are guzzlers the sports are better cars & the 6 cylinders are totally bomb proof..

I've been looking into getting one of these very soon! Was going to go for an earlier V plate ish 525i for around the 4k mark but having looked about 7k - 8k will get you a lovely angel-eyed pimp wagon!!!!

How well do the 525i's go? I'm not after raw power but something with a bit of grunt along with a bit of fuel economy!

Ginge my E39 528 tiptronic averaged just under 40 mpg on our recent trip to Croft and back which was 417 miles Average speed was over the legal limit apparently so it wasn't like i was driving it like my old man would either

Seriously thinking about one too, after 600 miles in the 2wd without air-con in France, the E39 really tickles my fancy at the moment.

cfoster where do you find them for 7-8k ??? Cheapest I've found is Ł10K, then it sort of jumps to Ł13 upwards, depending on mileage, etc...

Me too, but no E39 for that money

Some 3.5 and 3.8, but no 5.0 V8 under Ł13K, even done a nationwide search.

It's a V8 and a BMW, only just run in with 150,000 on the clock surely. Our 850Csi with 120,000 still purred so well you could stick a 50p coin on the engine and it wouldn't fall off.

Try this with a new cossie engine
