Does he already have a car in mind?

If not, tell him to look at mighty minis or mini se7ens, properly close racing on a sensible budget, you can be competitive in a mighty mini for 20K a year

If he doesn't have a race license then its just www.timeattack.co.uk that I can think of.

Sprints and hillclimbs need a sprint license which is cheaper and easier than an National B to get.

If he really wants to compete though, then he doesn't want a trackcar, he wants a RACECAR!

Find out what he wants to really do. Lost of cheap and cheerful race series out there

Time Attack and D1GB/Eurodrift is as small a budget and as least restrictive as you gonna get, and even that is expensive to be competitive, just cheap to get in to.
Tho TBH competition in the FWD category at TA is low at mo, and D1GB/EuroDrift is 80% skill and 20% car, so competitive is possible without big bucks.

Stuff like Stock Hatch etc etc is the cheapest aside from that, but to keep it cheap and competitive the rules are restrictive in what you can do to the cars, which may or may not take the fun out of things, depends what kind of person you are.
Hot Hatch aint cheap if you want to be competitive, so your better off staying in Stock Hatch unless your mildly minted.

yeah 20k a year is a bit out of my price range.

Just thinking of something like a stripped out Xr2, nova, 205 gti??.. etc.

Say if I had one of the above vehicle or something like, what can you enter?

Drayton Manor
HSCCGB

to name a few!

Having said that I should be racing in Extreem Mighty Minis soon

How hard? Piss. Relativley speaking!

Eurodrift is Division 1 if D1GB is Premier League.

To get a Eurodrift licence you need to go to one of the practice days and pass the relativley simple test.
Then pay your 80quid and enter.
Safety rules n regs are very basic for there.
www.eurodrift.com/regs.htm

D1GB Licence is hard, need to have the skills. Need to go to one of the licence days, been i think 3 so far. Just 2 people passed at last one, it aint easy.
Payment is similar.
Safety rules n regs are slightly harder, but not too bad.
www.d1gb.co.uk/rules.asp

Will get totally whupped in either unless good, but Eurodrift is a lot easier to get entered in to so some people enter just for fun in very very basic spec (ie welded diff n thas about it) cars.

Its still very much at the cheap end of the market for PROPER racing.

ie as in tour the uk racing at all the best tracks in a proper yearly racing series.

An idea of budget from the original poster would have been a good idea if he wasnt a cunt

(i figure as no doubt he will get offended whatever anyone puts i may as well do it properly!)

I'm guessing theyre STOCK hatchbacks. so that probably means theyre hatch backs with stock engines?

Stavros, how much is it to enter each drift even then? I watched 5th gear the other night and saw how much trouble tiff had getting to grips with it. I'm under no delusions as to how shit i'm going to be at least I guess the one benifit is i've never done anything like it before so im not at the disadvantage that i have to completely relearn what I already know (as tiff did) but on the other hand tiffs a driving god compared to me

Already said, its 80quid per round for Eurodrift, and think similar, or 100, for D1GB.

TBH i dont think Tiff was at a major disadvantage having to relearn, as he still knows driving more than most, just had never done some of the stuff he needed to do.
Some of the leading people in Eurodrift and D1GB are racers.
And that still dont explain the spaccy stuff he was doing like pulling the handbrake and kicking the clutch at the same time, the panicky goon

But just as many (well, most actually) are normal people who have the skills to pay the bills.

Caterham Academy.

£17k for a season's racing all inc the cost of the car, entry fees etc, and the car is still worth good money, considering it's road legal.

If I can get sponsorship sorted again, it's the way I'll be going next year.......

Ah sorry, thought you meant it was just 80 quid or whatever to get entry to the series then didnt know if each event was more or whatever.

When I get the 200 you can expect me knocking at your door in the middle of the night asking for drifting lessons

SPOT ON

forgot all about that championship, even though i worked with someone who did it once, doh!

He got about 42K back for the car at the end of it too IIRC!

PROPER racing, in perfectly matched (well as much is possible cars) cars, you really cant fault it.

If i had the spare time, i would definately do that series myself too

Well, embedded in one of the bits of armco on the sweeping downhill right handers anyhow

I'd fookin love to race one day if I ever earn big bucks. Wouldn't even consider it on a salary under £50k though, I like to live comfortably and spend money far too much

To be honest its really not that expensive , the major outlay is always the car and the Test procedure , ARDS etc...
1st Join a Motor club with an active Motorsport involvement , for instance the Lydden hill circuit has a local club , SEMSEC who put on race meetings , i used to do 3 races on a meeting for £150 , add your fuel and bits and away you go ,ok so i chose a big fuck off cosworth but you can pick up 205's or fiestas to learn in for peanuts .

What is it you want to do ? What sort of facilities do you have (ie can you prepare your own car, get it to events, fix it, rely on having a service crew etc).

The racing roundy roundy bit is the easy bit to sort out, having the back-up and friends to support you is more difficult.

There is a whole host of things you could do with a Fiesta, Nova etc.

I'd be more keen to look at rallycross if I was to start all over again.

Part tarmac part loose, stock championships, regular meetings, and entry fees of around £210 per event make it attractive.

However if your car is standard you wont win a thing and will get dissapointed and frustrated very quickly. No mater what championship you enter there will always be the money men who have bigger and better budgets than you, they know the cheats and will use them until they get caught.

Budget approx £10k for your first season in whatever you do (that includes the car)
