This will be the easiest as you can then work on the parts swapping while not having to lean in a engine bay!!
You can hug me later!
OK through the bottom now can I have some detail of whats involved.
I'm guessing Strut top mounts, ARB, steering rack knuckle, crossmember
Will I have to remove the exhaust?
Hows the gearbox removed?

i've done engine out of top once, and engine out of bottom 4 times on my fiecos,
And by far the engine, box, sub frame out of the bottom is alot easier and faster.
i had to remove zorst, steering uj, driveshafts, prop, TCA's, steering rod ends, and gear stick.

Less time under there the better i say!
Right ok i'll stick with what i said earlier as doing it any other way is just as much if not more grief!
You will need to remove the exhaust and the rear propshaft
Disconnect the speedo and clutch cables as well as un-plugging the reverse light switch
Remove the gear lever from within the car
Un-bolt the gearbox crossmember and front arb from the car.
Disconnect the front brake lines
Undo the top mounts for the front suspension
Support the engine with a hoist and undo the front crossmember bolts
Lower the lot to the ground.
The above is assuming you have already removed all the plumbing and wiring from the engine.
If i have forgotten anything which i no-doubt have i'll add it later
After it is all out use the hoist to lift the front of the car to enable you to drag the engine etc out from under. Please do it SAFELY though!!!

Ps Spadge i hope i'm not being charged storage

No worries about storage if you have though as i binned it last Friday
as spadge mentioned is the easiest way
but ive done this, just get a trolley like this from homebase tesco or somewhere and chp the handle off
makes life so much easier as once that engine and box is on the floor is a pain t move from under the car

Good idea mate but i like doing things the hard way and using a bit more muscle
Another quick point for Paul you will need to do it outside of that garage or you are going to struggle like fook mate!

need a van though
marks and sparks have some good trollys
they interconnect, 4 totally independant wheels, made from plastic and have a loading of 150 kg per unit
would need 3 or 4 for an engine and gearbox tho....
