Merc E220 CDI
Thinking about getting on in the near future on around a 51 plate. Anyone had any experiance with them? What are they like, problems and whats servicing costs like?
They're good mate and I think the E class is cracking value for money
Check the gearbox oil if you're going auto, especially if you're looking at a highish miler, they like a seal at the front and aren't cheap if they need replacing.
Interior trim isn't as good as it used to be so check for bits that have snapped off.
For example I just replaced the cowling round the ignition barrel in one [40k miler too
] having said that it was only £2 for the bit - though I did lose quite a bit of skin off my knuckles
Servicing is cheap mate, plugs and filters aren't any dearer than any other car nowadays - try M-Benz dealers first, you may be pleasantly surprised
And the engines are such an age old and simple design any monkey can work on them

Cool thats what i like to hear on servicing. Will deffo be an auto, as want an auto car next even if i dont get a merc. But as the saying goes if you buy a Merc make sure its an auto. Deffo lot of car for money, i will be getting on with around 80k i suppose for money on 51 ish plate.
You got one? any pics to? Would like Avantgarde with all the extras see how it goes, need to sell the saff first

No diesel mercs at the moment, that last E class was a 240 with the v6 in....
There may well be a Y plate [first of the late shape] C220cdi Elegance coming in the next few months. Belongs to an old customer that usually changes after his 3 years finance arrangement is up
Just so happens he wants to change it for a Saff cossie!
not really.
You're right about the auto, I'm using a c200 at the moment and it's a gash manual

Cool, if it comes up for sale and its mint let me know. As might be in the market for one then. Though ideally would like bit newer one, but wont mind to much on right car.

alright mate i have a merc and mercedes will do you for the servicing the first servicing of the year is £500 then £650 later on mercedes after sales service is a joke anyway tyres are costly as well heres my bad boy lol
The estates are bloody huge you know!
not really had any problems with them tbh, glow-plugs are often neglected as they're well known to snap, sooo some people just tarde them in when they start to not start as many garages budget for a head job when quoting prices for glow plugs.
I've done a few and not broken one yet so so far so good!
I really like the coupe as pictured above, theres a e220cdi coupe on autotrader atm with about 90k miles & six speed manual iirc, under £9k on a 02 plate i think?

Doesnt your brother dabble in a few? Be careful though mate as I went down the mature sensible path and bought a Lexus IS200. Its nice to drive around but just boring. Mine always got me from A-B which was the primary reason I bought it. I was sick of it after 3 months and then it took a furthur 9 to shift the thing. I ended up losing a lot of $$ on it.
I just sold a diesel ML270 which has taken 6 months and it was terrible on cold start but ok once it going, purely from an A-B perspective. It was like a road going boat.
If its something modern and reliable you are after, look for something that fits your personality mate and as much as I hate to say it, Evo's and Scoobies will give you more grin factor than a diesel Merc. Pop over and drive my Evo, see if that changes your mind

LOL Alan, i will pop over later to have a go! (i wish)
I dunno mate not sure i will get bored see how it goes. If i get one it will deffinatley be a good deal so i wont lose money on it for 6months ish anyway to make my mind up.

I have a C180KSE for sale at the mo, its lovely car but unfortunately I cant let Rhys have a go cause my traders policy wont cover family members on a test drive, which sucks.
I dont understand my bro either, thought I was the oldest

Servicing is alot if they go wrong, my mate with one (that i mentioned earlier) reckons to look out for water pumps on them IIRC, other than that it's the same as anything, look after it and it'll be fine
