Default Hydraulic handbrake with 4wd and ABS system.

Hi

I would like to fit a hydraulic handbrake to my 4wd but there are 2 things I am unsure about. The first is the 4wd would it kill the transfer box by locking the rear wheels. The second is can one be fitted to the normal abs brake system without having to change it all for a pedal box arrangement.

Thanks muppet.

if you use the handbrake to do boy racer type turns then yes, you will eventually kill the transfer box

but no, you don't need to do anytihng silly to the pedal box to fit the hydrualic handbrake

you do need a little resivour and master cylinder in the centre console though

I'm more curious about it than anything but it would be nice if I wanted to do say a sprint/hill climb and there are any hairpins then I would want it then. I am still uncertain how you would plumb it in as the ones I have seen have all been for cars that have one master cylinder for the rear and one for the front. Where as the std setup has a split diagnol system afaik. Has anyone got a diagram showing how it would all be plumbed in.

thanks muppet.

Hydro handbrakes are simple and dont need a seperate master cyl.

If your brake system isnt a single line to the rear brakes then it needs converting to one, and the handbrake literally is plumbed in line with that.

you do really need a gearbox with a clutch on the rear prop

tim finch or ian on this site could sort you out with one

thats that way I thought it would have to be done which does make it alot more involved and was hoping there would be a easier solution. For the mot I would keep the original handbrake and the hydraulic would be a vertical type in between the dash and gear stick.

The only other way I could imagine it working with a split diagnol system would be to have 2 masters for the handbrake but I know you cant get masters small enough and have never seen a set up like that.

Spikey was your noddy car 4wd or rwd.

Gareth I doubt my budget could stretch to a gearbox with a clutch on the rear prop as I wouldn't be using it that often.

Group N rallycars somehow manage with completly standard transmission system and even wuth uprated centre VC.

You just need to use the clutch a bit when using handbrake and forget about keeping rear's locked. Just short pull on the handbrake, throtle, let the clutch go and you're going nicely out of the hairpin With hydraulic it's much easier but even with standard one and good pads on the rear it's possible

sounds good. Another reason I was thinking about it is because my handbrake is quite awkward to yank on in a hurry so rather than trying to relocate mine I was considering a hydraulic one.

thanks muppet

Hydraulic handbrake will help for sure. But consider this, do you do much tarmac rallying or Carlos Sainz-style high-speed handbakre aplication? Probably 99% people here don't. So why hydraulic handbrake? To do a u-turn?

I'd like to have one though.

Things rarely used usually don't work as they should when needed.

I must admit I'm pretty scared when it comes to hairpins in 4wd car. I never know if standard handbrake will be strong enough and if it's not situation becomes very dangerous. You ned quite a lot of place to swing 4x4 car opposite way without handbrake
