Incidently a rebuilt engine with the STI9 crank will be areally good, solid engine for a long time,or just make sure that the fueling is good on the standard-ish p1, then i would go for the p1

And this includes p1 and wr1 !!!!
I personally like the wr1 scooby ,and some of the others but if i had the extra cash it would still be a evo everytime

st3v3,
I have spent much development time in BOTH cars (most variants)
when I designed ecu monitors for them so know a fair bit about them.
Also spent alot of time hanging around Simon Norris of Norris Designs
and all of his EVO's.
Above all, its just my opinion too - as asked for by the topic starter

I notice, no one else has been asked to justify their opinion on this
I will only add, I am a FORD fan thru and thru (rare these days on this site )
But if I had to choose between the two, would be the EVO as it is a better
base for tuning, and has a sensible looking engine that you can change
the spark plugs on easily and doesnt sound like it has a bad missfire like
the scooby does also the EVO just looks much better.
All IMO, Thats enough for me just for starters. !

If you did a survey on the Jap scene I think you would find more subaru owners had engine failures then evo, im pretty damn sure.
why is this then???
Piston failure is common as on the scoobs.
More commonly right hand bank as the exhaust manifold gets hot it causes det on this side especially which causes piston failure.
Lagging the manifold is a good start in stopping this.
Often we did an equal length header conversion on these and lagged the manifold before fitting to eliminate this problem.
Another common failure is them running cranks dry (and knocking the big ends out) at high revs and going round corners so a sump widening and baffling procedure and oil cooler and pump fixture eliminated this fault too and enabled to run extra oil and to keep oil temps down.
Saw many come in at my previous employer with these faults.

If you look on ScoobyNet you will find literally loads of posts where the P1 engines have let go before 60k miles. It's a known fact that there was a problem with them.

I owned an STi8 and now own an EVO VIII 260 and to be honest the EVO is in another league handling wise, just as the Scoob was over the Esc Cos.
I can honestly say the EVO is THE BEST car I have ever owned what a machine bought with 800 miles on the clock for £20,000 add a £1,000 worth of mods and and hey presto 340 bhp 338 lbs and its absolutely bloody awsome
what do I miss from the scooby, the sound still sounds fantastic IMO would I buy another Scoob doubt it, would I sell the EVO not in the foreseeable future, would I buy another Esc Cos Hell Yes LOL!

I was in the same situation except it was a normal STi vs a 7. I looked at a few 6's and went for a ride in a couple. Loved the performance but it is the old shape Evo.
In then end settled for a 7 and it honestly is the best car I have owned. Ticks all the right boxes. It has performance, cheap servicing, reliability and economy plus looks.
Guy opposite has a 2000 STI and I do a fair bit of stuff with the WRX guys here, the warble of the WRX exhaust is unbeatable IMO and one of the best around.
Definately go the 7, you will not be disapointed. Mine is even cheap to insure but having said that my saff wasnt too much either over here.

Evo VI Tommi Makinen - it won't lose you as much money in the long run.
Keep money in reserve for better brakes and an uprated clutch, they (the 7) seem to have a clutch problem here in Germany.
But out of the 2 you listed - I'd still go Evo.

evo, best option straight out the box
P1's are nice but think more reliability problems, and any non petrol heads will think its just another scoobi

havent driven a p1, but have driven a classic turbo 2000 and tbh was very disapointed with it in general, have also driven a 340bhp evo VIII and was fairly impressed, it was like a new fast car should be felt well made, was very responsive and kinda gave me that 'cossie' rush

Owned an Evo 5 and a 6. Not owned a Scooby, as i wouldnt buy one if i got the best deal on earth for one....
Total Chav-mobeels, they are EVERYWHERE you look, ranging from £3k 5hitboxes with lexus lights to £20k new models that still look pants.
The EVO anyday, i would and will have another one in a shot. Currently even thinking about selling the Series 1 once its finished and buying another 6, or maybe a 7.
Seen a LOT of scooby engine failures up here in Aberdeen.....never once heard of an evo with an engine prob...couple of diff problems, but thats been through lack of proper servicing.
Evo anytime.

Evo defo i own a evo 6 with a few mods & its gr8
My mate has a scooby wrx he paid 8 grand at the time now its worth about 3.5 grand & he raced a reanult megane 2.0 litre 16v the other day n it was shoving him out the road his car is a minter he keeps it gr8 but it just isnt fast & he knowes himself if he chips it he will end up doing a piston..
My other mate had a standard sti5 3 door & it melted twice there is loads horror stories with subs..
Evos at the most you will need a clutch if you start launching it
