Default opinions please. time to buy a car

Just wondering on your opinions on a car for around the 2k mark, want sumit 3 door an fairly quick but not mega expensive to run, used to have a series 2 and dam thing cost the earth!

looking into a mk3 astra gsi or nissan almera gti both around 2k price now both around the 140-150bhp and both not bad lookers

but then spotted st24 for same price, alot of car for little money....

so confused!...

DONT WANT ANOTHER S2 as i think £ for £ they cant match the cars ive stated for everyday use!

(gets ready for the slateing)

Well i personally dont think any petrol turbocharged car is cheap to run

my choice would be mrk6 rs2k
astra gsi redtop not eco shite
st24 owned one and is a superb car for the money and would deffo have another no worries , every toy and electric for sweetie money tbh and pull well through gears

problem with escorts and astras is rusty rear arches but both have near bullet proof engines with same performance ,would always choose the rs2k for me but im biased to ford slightly ,lol, but i have driven the astra gsi and was a excellent motor also

I'd look into buying a nice E30 325i sport for the 2k mark - there are some stunning cars to be had, cheap to run, easy to maintain, cheap to maintain (even dealer parts are cheap), handle like a dream as standard, and with 172bhp from the 2.5 straight 6, close ratio gearbox, limited slip diff and a goegeus bodykit, it's what i'd be spending my money on

But this is presuming you want a nice quick rwd car that will give you some fun if you provoke it

It would be worth not having the air con though IMO

bollcoks to the aircon - its extra weight and its not needed in winter

Altho having said that, my new runabout, should I buy it at the weekend, will have aircon, its far too warm at the moment not to have it

this is true, I've spent the weekend in my garage working on my project,

however, I also spent a lot of time driving to people to have things made, hot hot hot, I've now got "truckers sunburn" - one arm burnt, one arm not

You can

If you wait another 6 months or so, you'll be able to pick up a new-ish (6 or 7 years) BMW 520i SE, (the ones with the angle eyes, or the pre-facelift version of that)

very nice car, and a LOT of car for the money

Ignore me and buy the 325

The best looking BMWs, and I hate BMWs. But I'd have that, in a heartbeat

That E30's sex

But he could get an E36 for 2k. It's gonna be up around a hundred K for that money but it's not a problem with those engines and you can get FSH with them at that price. 192BHP out of the box and a nice handling drive

I have one, but I'm not biased

James,

Mk2 Mondeo Ghia X with a RSAP kit.

They look exactly like the ST24 and if you get the V6 version it has exactly the same engine!

The ghia x's go for less than 2k (St24s go for 2.5k+) and they come with a few extra bits!

Electric windows all round
electric roof
remote alarm / immob
remote boot pop
cruise control
AWS (on earlier models)
air con (climate control on later models)
traction control (V6's)
heated seats
electric drivers seat
