A coil normally has 3 wires going to it.
in my case a green, black and brown.
the green goes to the ecu
the brown to earth
and the black to the fuse board.
can anyone throw some light on what the black and green cables do?
are they pos or negs and switched or constant feeds?
im having trouble starting a mk3 golf. the black i think is a live is actually shorting to earth through the fuse box to earth. but im wondering if i disconnect the black from the coil and connect 12v staright onto the coil will the car start?
or is that black a pulsed live?
i just want to get the car started to make sure there are no other faults in the starting system.

As it's a VW, im not sure of the colour coding.
The coil -ve is connected to an igniton live. It's coil -ve but it is actually +12v so dont be fooled. The other side of the coil is a pulsed earth from the ECU. They are only 2 wires u need - the other may goto rev counter.

By normal convention on a standard 2-terminal coil, the coil terminal marked "+" or "15" is connected to ignition switched 12V supply and terminal marked "-" or "1" is connected to ECU or Ignition amplifier and hence pulsed to ground to switch the coil.
There may be additional wire(s) connected to the coil - from coil "-" will go to the tacho, from coil "+" may have an interference suppressor attached, the other side of which will be connected to chassis.

so in generaly as soon as you turn the key and turn on the ignition lives the coil will have a constant 12v and the neg is pulsed via the ecu.
im not getting that 12v so i think thats where i'll start looking first.
cheers

cheers guys.
it seams thats the problem. no live getting to the coil.
the lights on the dash arnt coming on either so they must be fed from the same place as the coil.
just a matter of finding a decent drawing of the fuse board and see where the feed should be coming from.
