Default Chatter?

hello my brother has got a nissan 200sx 1.8 turbo and he is wondering:
1. How do you get chatter from the turbo?
2. What do you have to do to get chatter (Mods)
and is it bad for your turbo if it does chatter?

no mods just reomve the dump valve and let the turbo chatter and theres always been the arguement from both sides of chatters bad but also dump valves take the pressure out the turbo and allow it to over speed the bearings

This debate is as old as the hills and opinion varies wildly as to whether it will cause damage or not. TBH just fitting something for a noise is a bit sad. My Fiesta does my tits in chattering

Still at least I didn't part with Ł80 to sound like a bus

They dont have recirc DVs as std so no need to worry there, but remove any DV fitted.

Removing the airbox then will give you SOME chatter, but TBH its not that loud (unlike S14s which chatter mega loud when you remove the std recirc DV).

But fitting a FMIC will make it chatter loads louder, as will fitting a metal filter-turbo pipe, and a Z32/Skyline type AFM which is much more free flowing.
As will more boost, more boost the better.

(Note, a different AFM cant be done without suitable chip/map)

And thats it from me, time to go drinking again...

Remove the dump valve and fit an aftermarket air filter if it doesn't aleady have one.

And as said, an FMIC will help loads.

Chatter is cause by air returning to the turbo when the throttle closes, we don't want to start another 'wastegate chatter' thread.
