I've just picked up an E34 5-series 2.5TDS Touring, and to be honest, it's not a patch on any other BM I've had, bit disappointed to tell the truth

Get a good test drive in it, see if you like the estate. I don't think I do, ruins the feel of the car.

mmmmmmm 2.5 sounds like what im after

Steve how much different is it ?

I used to have a 318tds (think thats what it was) company car for a short while and it was cracking to drive, not the fastest but still nice.

Dave, I'm honestly not sure mate. Before this in the 5-series range I've had a 535, a 540, a 520 (don't ask), and a 525tds saloon, and they were all fine for me ...

I'm maybe comparing it to what it replaced too much (a Pug 406 2.1 diesel, which was half the weight, and a lot more responsive) ... it just feels incredibly heavy around town. On the motorway it's excellent, I've got to say that, really really good, it just feels a bit 'lifeless'... if that makes sense. Probably not. As my MOT tester described it 'it's a fucking great German brick'

I've not tried the 3-series D-Tourings, but if they're as different as this is to the saloon version, It's worth getting a good test drive. I'm going on a bit I know, I'm just really disappointed with the car, despite all the fancy bits.

Still returns 40mpg under 'spirited' use though.

Think I'll be getting a test drive now after what youve just said mate. Hope it aint as bad as the 5 series

Only problem ive got now is that the last BMW I drove was the 330ci conv that I was running about with last year

Just like the BM's for what they are and as you say the MPG is fantastic, far better than my mondeo TD especially when your giving it some

Definitely mate

The Pug before (that's on my driveway with a broken exhaust) did 45mpg, from a 2.1, 110bhp, 250lb/ft engine, the BM equals that with twice the weight, 30 more bhp, and 400cc extra, can't work out how it does it

Deffo better than the Mundano, I've seen those dip well into the 30's under heavy use (tried one of them as well )

My dad has a BMW 318 tds touring and it goes like a rocket for an boilburner
I've got an omega 2.5 TD Estate (BMW 2.5 TD enging) and its not a patch on the 1.8 TD Touring - the big 6pot is lathargic and slow to respond, the 1.8 4pot (which is only 1697cc) is nippy and very revvy for a derv

an E36 325 tds and a E34 525tds are the same engine,

later 4 series (e39) can be 525tds (early cars) or 525d - the 525d is a much better engine.

Not sure on the trange rover... land rover have had a good 5 cylider they have used for a while now.
