Default Fooking BT

Following on from my thread a week or so ago discussing usage limits. I have just spoken to BT about it.

My Broadband account is subject to a 40gb usage limit. They claim for last month, I used 57.08gb and if my usage continues to exceed the 40gb limit, they will charge me £1 per gb that I go over.

On Smit's advice (thanks Smit) I now use Netlimiter Pro to monitor my usage, but for last month, it shows 38gb (approx), which is 20gb less than BT are claiming.

Since the May stats, I have restricted the Upload speed to 3kb!!

BT tell me that there is no way is my software right and that their system is definately right. I have been faithful to BT, but I reckon they are gonna lose our BB account very soon.

The other question is, when they upgraded me from 2 meg to 8 meg, would they have renewed my commitment, binding me for 12 months again?

The 8 meg upgrade turns out to only be 5.5 meg in my area, due to technicalities within the exchange. However, I have measured it using more than one site and it comes back, at best, as 4 meg (on a good day).

OK, so I missed a couple of days at the start of May, but you can see from my usage pattern that there is no way did those 2 days amount to 20gb!! It would have been 3gb approx.

Pretty much every ADSL provider puts in these usage limits, however Plus.net dont charge when you go over, they just slow the connection down..

(Plus usage is only counted during peak hours)

I believe some providers have experienced problems with their "counting" software and very often read over; eg. Plus.net has recently informed all its customers that has been the case...

Cheers.

BT offer a service where you can log in and check your usage. We have it.

Going offtrack slightly I'm positive ISP's dont just messure the amount of data transfered but the type of data / websites visited etc.

If your downloading dodgey films etc im sure they know. If your looking at some bird doing unholy things with a pig and a strap-on they know about it!

spying fuckers.

A guy I work with had a similar problem but with NTL. What happened was he had set up a proxy server and people where using it to upload and this was going against his allowed limit. He had uploaded 370gb in one month according to NTL.

When you get BT to upgrade you to 8meg (or whatever you happen to get) it starts a new 12 month contract period.

So, all these additional things like people raiding my internet connection, what should I watch for??

I notice that my Wireless feature on my router is currently enabled, when I look on the system settings. I can't imagine anyone is stealing from me via wireless though, I don't think I have anyone close by who is under pensionable age!!

Anyone know how to turn the wireless off? Its a Belkin Wireless-G Router....

Do you know how much equipment would be needed to do that for every single end-user connection? I know it would bankrupt 95% of all UK ISPs, if they were forced to do it because of some daft government law (it has been discussed, apparently).

PlusNET (to use an example) and their Ellacoyas (and any other ISPs that use that kind of equipment) can no doubt differentiate between the TYPE of traffic, but to do full deep-level packet-inspection to determine the content of each packet transferred would take LOTS of ridiculously powerful equipment and would slow connections down quite considerably.

you need to log into your router and change the wireless setting to off/disabled

to access your router you usually type 192.168.0.1 in the address bar. if this doesn't work double click the little network connection screen in the taskbar click support and the number after default gateway is what you need to type into the address bar to access your router

if your wireless is not protected then anyone in range can use your connection

I think you'd be suprised just how easy it is to do and how little equipment is required, at the company I work for example, we recently installed kit with the ability to capture all internet traffic in and out of our site and store it for 3 months in order to help check/trap intrusion attacks (we are a big financial company and our own ISP BTW)

Sidewinder G2's for example (http://www.securecomputing.com/index.cfm?skey=1026) can inspect traffic in/out as well and a few of these could easily inspect ISP level traffic right to application level - just take a look at the throughput rates...

Sidewinder G2 Security Appliance performance

3+ Gbps stateful inspection throughput
Unparalleled 2.2 Gbps of application layer throughput
15,000 connections accepted per second
170,000+ new mail messages per hour
Up to 1,000,000+ total simultaneous connections
"Tunable" firewall balances performance against security requirements
and thats for only one....just imagine a farm of them load balanced!

Do you have any sort of security on there? The two things you should do are use wep or wpa or summat and also use the filter to filter out all mac addresses and then it is a lot harder to use.

Got to plus.net can't go wrong with them, as above they inform when you go above the 'fair' usage and just cap your speed until another limit around 30Gb i think then slow the connection further unless you are around 100Gb per month!

Plus.net sounds like the way to go.

Regarding my Router. I want to disable the Wireless aspect altogether at the moment, but there doesn't appear to be a simple 'off' or 'disable' function anywhere!!

bcracknell, the sort of equipment youre talking about is still nowhere near as powerfull as that being discussed.

theres a BIG DIFFERENCE EBTWEEN LOGGING GENERAL http TRAFFIC AND (oops caps...) actually examining every single packet in/out

Christian and Beccy

turn off broadcast ssid, that will limit the connections via wireless.

also under wireless security, turn on wep 128 and enter a 26 digit code
(number or letters), then save,

people wont be able to connect then

COSSIE LEE - Foooook me!! Whatever do you download??

Spiky, I have now found how to turn the Wireless off. I will try and set the security up properly before I resort to that though. It has a choice of 64bit or 128bit WEP, which should I use?

Is there any way of seeing who has/is connected to my router?

64 uses a 10 digit password, 128 uses a 26 digit, use 128 dude .

it should have an option, show wireless clients connected

if you got no wireless, you wanna hope it says none

Dear Mr avid-fan

You may have seen in our latest adverts that BT Broadband is changing. • 250 BT Openzone minutes every month4 for wireless internet access at ‘hotspots’ around the UK

• our best-ever online security packages

…all at no extra cost.

Plus – your usage guideline is increasing

We’re also increasing your usage guideline – the total amount of data you can send (upload) and receive (download) through your broadband connection each month.

- BT Broadband Option 3 usage guideline will increase from 20GB to 40GB.

- BT Broadband Option 4 usage guideline will increase from 40GB to 50GB.

A Total Broadband solution

We’ll be in touch again soon to let you know how you can take advantage of these great new features.

Kind regards,

The BT Total Broadband Team

1 8Mb speed is subject to various factors including local availability, distance from exchange and line test. If your line won't support up to 8Mb, we'll offer the best speed available on your line. Conditions apply. A new 12-month contract will apply, starting from the date of your upgrade.

2 Means Local and National calls. Excludes non-geographic calls (0845, 0870), premium rate numbers, information services, calls to mobile and the Channel Islands. Other exclusions apply. Calls are charged at 3p a minute after one hour. Redial before one hour to avoid call charges. Subject to status. The quality of the reception on the phone line may not match that of a normal landline and may vary depending on internet traffic. Service restrictions apply. Certain call types are not guaranteed e.g. 999, 112 emergency calls. Service will fail if there is a power failure. Abuse policy applies. Touchtone telephone required.

3 BT Broadband Talk free Video Calls apply when both caller and recipient use a BT Videophone or BT Softphone with webcam. Requires BT Broadband Talk and VoIP-enabled router or BT Home Hub.

4 You will receive a voucher for 3000 minutes being 250 free minutes a month for 12 months. When you’ve used up all your inclusive minutes – or it’s after your first 12 months – you’ll need to buy a voucher or subscription to continue using the service. Inclusive minutes do not apply when roaming abroad. You need a wireless-enabled PC or Mac laptop, a personal digital assistant (PDA) or handheld games console (such as Nintendo DS).

Mine might only be on 2Mbps, but it's still unlimited-download, so I can pull down the maximum theoretical amount of about 632GB a month, if I could find enough space to store it!
