New computer, seems a bit slow?
After years of a shit computer on windows 98 that I was perfectly happy with (never play games n shit), I now got a flashy top of the range thingy and ive jus got it working.
I dunno the spec off the top of my head, Fujitsu Siemens Scaleo P something something blah blah.
Anyhow, internet seems pretty dead slow, and just in general it seems to be (maybe its jus me, but internet DEFFO is).
Any ideas?

Nah, got it through some computers through work thing, so was mega cheap, only reason i got it.
Nowt seems to be installed barring Windows XP, stuff like Nortons etc was on there as a Setup program, but not installed, so dont think thats an issue.
And the internet i installed off the Blueyonder CD like I did on the old computer, but it deffo aint downloading at same speeds it did before
Downloading at about 15kb/sec it seems

you never stated what op system you are using now
that would help for a start ..
what rams it got .. and what hdrive is running
this all helps
you can disable norton via the toolbar right click on the icon
i have to disable norton worm to play battlefield 2
all the options are there

ALSO, is there any way of transferring files from my old HD to this PC without having to take the casing of the new one apart and manually installing the HDs? Some kind of cable maybe?
(dont mind removing the HDs from the old one, jus dont really want to take new one to bits)

Is it a usb modem you have with telewest ? Or a cable modem ?
Either way, this new machine should be much superior to your old machine. If not for the fact that there are probably pretty cheap componants inside it.
If you've still got your old machine, it is possible to network that with the new machine and transfer your files over. This however, will be a mission I'm afraid. Networking a Windows 98 machine together with a Windows XP will give an immense headache to most "neville's"
Either way, wep pages loading, general run of the mill stuff should be much faster then it was before. Even if it is a shonky Pentium 4.
The machine I have is a P4 2.66ghz with 2gig or ram which I put in, a 256 meg graphic's card in it, and additional 80 gig hard drive for my mp3's on it. Made it considerably faster, seem's to run Max Payne, Command And Conquer Generals fine.

USB Modem? Cable Modem?
Ahh hangon, the Modem says "Motorolla SB5100 SURF Board Cable Modem" on it, so guess its a cable modem...
Just did a three different Internet speed test thingys, all gave between 120 and 140 kb/sec. Thats shit isnt it?
Any ideas?

Im sure its faster than that, thought it was 2meg.
But them tests showed that, and TBH i could live with that, but when i download stuff its never faster than like, 15kb/sec, even from big companies like MSN

msn is shit slow mate you can have a fast connection but wont speed it up as its capped at other end, check your conection at the back of the pc to the modem is it usb (flat rectangle connector) or rj45 (like a phone connector but thicker) if usb get an rj45 lead and connect it via that, modems have conections for both

Just download a trial game of www.microsoft.com m8, that will probably give you the best speed.
Hence this

windows xp sp2 has an internal firewall that most likely is enabled... sometimes if used with 3rd party firewall it bites itself in the ass.....
try to see whats installed on the thing in START => control panel => add or remove programs and list them here ....maybe take it from there
michael
p.s. sounds like a SW conflict or too much fujitsu crap installed....

Ok...
I changed the cable from a shoddy looking phone wire lookalike thingy to a USB cable and now the speeds are coming in on the tests at 350kb/sec+
I tried the test as per what dan said, and it was doing 280kb/sec or so downloading Age of Empires or some shit.
So thats much more like it, wheter thats what its meant to be tho, i dunno
Thought the fone wire was meant to be better tho
(BTW, windows firewall is off, jus Nortons)
