me totally stumped,
Could it be just a case of a flooded engine? and if so whats the procedure for sorting that as I have left the car for over a week and it had no effect

Hi mate has the car been stood for a long time?
If so the (canny remember the name of it) fuel flap in the meterhead maybe stuck open and the needle/pin maybe stuck fully open and be overfueling and spoiling the plugs....Same thing happened to me....
Sorry for the shit terms its been such along time since ihave worked on an rst i have forgotten......

This is going to sound really stupid, but just check the battery leads and terminals are all really clean and the connections are really tight. I had a problem with my Porsche 944 Turbo where it wouldn't keep running but would turn over and that's all it was in the end. Like I say, it sounds totally stupid, but it worked for me, and it's another thing to try however daft it seems.
And yes, it probably is flooded, so leave it for a bit before trying it again. The same thing again happened with the Porsche.

I had a similar problem when i put the turbo motor in my xr2, was sparking fine, triple checked the timing and it stank of fuel.
i left it a while, warmed the plugs in the oven (lol), disconnected the cold start and then it fired up first time. i think like you say gra with switching the ignition on and off constantly, the fuel pump primed so many times it was just flooded.

no, havent done anything work on it, really, basically say 1mnth ago i dusted it off after nearly 1yr not used, and did a bit of priming getting ready to finish it off etc, got it running fine no probs, starting every week, then for no reason last week it just wouldnt start, but my starter was smoking so figured it was constantly engaged and got a cheap one from ebay to troubleshoot but still no good, lol,

Do you have an alloy intercooler on the car?
I once had the old style pace intercooler on my car and due to the design it sat on the front crossmember.
The problem was the two green wires to the coil go across here so after a few months the wires wore through and i could no longer get a spark!!!
Might be worth checking if you do have one fitted
