i had a mk3 2.0 8v engine in my mk2Gti, theyre relatively torquey in comparison to the power, engines are good for a load of miles but i had problems with core plugs going all the time, and theyre renowned for unstable idling, which is a total twat ( cutting out when slowing down mainly ) theyre quite underpowered compared to the 16v ( 113bhp vs 150) but their a lot easier to drive, dont have to put ya foot to the floor to get going as much as the valver version, can pick em up for next to nowt now

if i think of any other engine things ill get back to ya lol

they also have a distinct lack of handling compared to the mk2, and some chronic body roll

Dont be fooled!

They're fairly reliable - but not as bombproof as their reputation sugests. (aswell as how many owners, remember to ask how many gearboxes it has had!)

Also they are really really slow!

Nice car? yes. A Gti hot hatch? NO!

The worst Golf GTI to date apparently , I in fact think theyre the best looking Golf to date apart from the newest one. But as said above my mate had one and it was realy slow but if it just for your lass then the slower the better I suppose, I know thats the case with my lass

Fuse boxes and wiring are common problems, causing engine to cut out.

Engines are good though

As said above, not fast and don't handle as well as other cars but you said you're not bothered about that

Think i'd rather have a tdi mk3 than a gti tbh..
