Default What's involved in setting up a server to run a web domain?

I'm an IT person myself but I have no real server experience.

I need to come up with a way of making extra money as there are things I really want to do. I reckon my best chance is coming up with something on the web so I wanna know what's involved in running my own site on my own server.

Also, if I did this, how does acquiring a domain name work? Do you still have to buy it or do you just register it?

Cheers

i think i understand what you are asking.

you would need a computer constantly connected to the net via a very high speed connection. you would buy a domain name and point the DNS to the IP address of your 'always on' server.

then you just create the site or content and put it on the server and people can access it via the domain name.

the connection has to be very good and fast, and the server well specced and reliable!

Cheers mate. I'm aware of how to point to the server IP with the web addy etc. Just wondered if it would be the same as when you buy a domain hosted by some hosting company.

What sort of spec server? I think I've come up with an absolutely cracking idea.

What sort of spec would I need for a moderate spec server? If I were to run a site with a main page and a couple of info pages etc. and an email contact form section I doubt it would need a really high speed line, would it? I have a 2meg connection at home and could hook it up to that.

It would share with my existing PC so would get half that. Would it be too slow?

What's a good spec server for something like this? I would likely build it myself.

to be honest, I really wouldnt waste time setting up your own server, as hosted space is so cheap anyway, also bear in mind that your ISP will complain very quickly as hosting your own server may well break your terms and conditions.

If you PM me I can give you some pointers for good Hosts.

As for domains, I always use www.namecheap.com - they are good and reliable, good customer service, price etc, thier user interface is also very good. avoid godaddy, they suck

I can also give you some site details that resellers and hosts use

Just buy a hosting package of many of the US companies. Will give you everything you need, youll never run anything of a residential line.

as said best off buying hosting, theres a lot more to it than meets the eye.

a 2meg home connection wouldnt be much use for anything unless its just a few people looking
